Re: "Friends" Discussion

So suppose someone knew they were the type of person who would become a "Nice Guy". They also knew that they would never find the courage to flat out tell the object of their affections that they liked them. It has been established that being the "Nice Guy" makes you a "Bad...

Re: The Right to Vote

I kind of liked the "earned citizenship" thing, but ultimately i would never implement it, and would fight it's implementation with my last breath. That effectively creates a ruling class, and we don't need anything like that. There's a difference between earned suffrage and earned citize...

Re: The Right to Vote

The trend I've seen in the responses is that there should be no restrictions for suffrage for citizens of age. But what is so bad about decreasing democratic participation? If someone does absolutely nothing for their country (especially if they pay no income tax), why should they have any say? They...

Re: Does Free Will exist?

I also believe in determinism, but for different reasons. We use our brains to make decisions, and our brains are part of the universe, thus subject to its physical laws. Our brains receive inputs from our eyes, ears, etc and use that information to flick electrochemical signals about and create an...

Re: Self Defense in schools

Oops, sorry  . Got rid of the wrong quote tag... I wasn't saying that the person who "didn't start it" should be let off completely; I'm just saying that not taking motive into account sends the message to the kids that motive doesn't matter; that's not true at all in the real world ...

Space Marines win because they have beer. And cold fusion.

Re: Rant Thread

It gets even worse with cross products. On a semi-related note, please, please, please don't name a vector "X". Problems involving things like (X x Y)*(Z*x) just make my head hurt (its suppose to be a the dot product of the cross-product of a vectors X and Y and a vector Z times a scalar x...

Re: Assassination, ever justified?

At least for the US, assassinations of enemies/terrorists/dictators aren't really an option anyway because the CIA sucks at doing them. How many times have we tried to kill Castro? And while not exactly assassinations, most of our special fancy-schmancy "covert ops" and missile strikes jus...

Re: Rant Thread

People. There is no such thing as "timesing" anything. 3 times 4 is 12. To get 12, you MULTIPLY 3 by 4.

Re: Human "breeding", and its implications

Environmental catastrophe is still, and will always be a threat. As long as we are stuck on one planet, we are doomed eventually run out of resources / blow each other to bits / get hit by a gamma-ray burst or by some other means have a high chance. All of those are pretty catastrophic. This may be ...

Re: Obama cancels campaign events; grandma is dying

The guy's grandmother just died for gods sake. Can't we just for once leave politics out of this and just say something like "That's sad"?

Its far too late for it to have any effect on the election anyway.

Re: Self Defense in schools

This does happen a great deal, but I think there's a little more to it. Staff are trying to instill the lesson that violence is always wrong, not in all situations everywhere, but within the walls of the school. It make the kids easier to manage if they all avoid fighting all the time, and if no fi...

Re: "Scantron" Discussion

And somehow we humans can invent scanning-probe microscopes that can "see" individual atoms, yet still can't invent a machine that can reliably scan tests not taken with a #2 pencil.

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Another lurker. I'm just one of those annoying teenagers (14) who thinks they know things but really has no clue how the world/society/differential equations/hedging [financially]/bovine dentistry etc. work(s). I know lots of fancy words and seem smart to my lemming-like "peers" at school....
