Re: What would you do with $10,000?

I'd buy myself an Android smartphone and tablet, new gaming rig, new headphones (and an amp to go with them) and a vast amount of bourbon. Realistically I should really keep it for paying for a Masters degree. But a smartphone and lots of whiskey sounds much more fun.

Re: Rant Thread (because we need more ranting)

I need to pass my Maths exam on Wednesday to get into Uni next year, this will be my third attempt at it. I'm spending most of my waking hours trying to get better to absolutely no avail. It's so intensely frustrating I have to take breaks at 30 minute intervals to rant about it.

Re: Ogg Vorbis

To quote from the Vorbis.com FAQ page: For now, quality 0 is roughly equivalent to 64kbps average, 5 is roughly 160kbps, and 10 gives about 400kbps. Most people seeking very-near-CD-quality audio encode at a quality of 5 or, for lossless stereo coupling, 6. The default setting is quality 3, which at...

Riceboy Sleeps. It's Jónsi from Sigur Rós and his boyfriend playing really mellow stuff. Sounds like Sigur Rós mixed with sleeping pills. Very good at getting you to sleep.

Re: Netbook Linux?

I use just a standard installation of Ubuntu on my netbooks. I did use the netbook remix, but I'm not a fan of it's netbook interface thing, so dumped it and went for a standard install. Evolution and Mozilla Thunderbird are the two most popular graphical mail clients. Neither is really "better...

The Music Game

This is a fun game that gets played on quite a few sites. Was very surprised that it wasn't played on here too. Here's how it works, you get two votes for adding and two votes for subtracting. You take two tallys away from the band you like the least and add two tallys to the band you like the most....

Re: Books with gritty realism.

(And yes I know alot of Welsh's work extremely exaggerates the area and isn't realistic, but some of it is). Haha, have you been to Leith? It's pretty much as dodgy as Welsh describes it. Well, some parts are improving but some areas are still pretty nasty. Avoid if possible, especially at night. I...

Re: The Flight of the Conchords

I got the first series on DVD for Christmas and loved it ever since. Favourite song has to be "Robots" but "Albi The Racist Dragon" is hilariously funny. The second series has been a bit of a disappointment, it's barely indistinguishable from the first in terms of the style of th...

Re: What are you readioactive now(and other book related stuff)?

I just finished reading Catcher in the Rye for the third time and loved it yet again. I can see a worrying amount of Holden in most of the people around me, so it's easy to find enjoyment in comparing Holden's actions/thoughts with some of my friends'. I have also just finished an interesting little...

Bit of a bump, but found some lyrics I want to share. From the beginning of Savior by Rise Against : It kills me not to know this, but I've all but just forgotten what the colour of her eyes were and her scars or how she got them Had to re-listen to that song about four times when I first heard thos...

Re: Catcher in the Rye stinks or is it just me?

I have a bit of a theory about Catcher in the Rye. All of the people in my year that do not like the book seem to be the ones with the most friends, do well in school and all that (successful in the conventional, school taught sense). All of the people that absolutely love the book are the stranger,...

Re: Humanity's Consciousness

The OP brings up a very interesting idea. I read this thread last night and have been thinking about it ever since. I do not think that the human race in it's current state is capable of forming an overarching consciousness, but I think in the future it is theoretically possible. The one thing that ...

Re: Teachers that cannot teach

My Maths teacher cannot teach to save herself. She spends a good half an hour of every (one hour) class moaning about something, normally someone talking or forgetting homework. Then when she does get round to doing some actual teaching, she just fires ideas onto the board with as minimal an explana...

Re: Nostalgia time! What was your first Linux distro?

I'm a relative Linux newbie. I started with Fedora Core 6, then quickly moved onto Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft).

Haven't shifter from Ubuntu yet, but quite tempted to give OpenSUSE a shot and give Fedora a proper go at some point.

I have been reading xkcd for a while now and been lurking around in the fora when an obscure reference in the comic flies over the top o...

Re: The single best computer food

Anything with any sort of noodles is normally good if you can avoid spattering sauce all over your monitor (*do not* read that out of context) or anything that can be cooked in the microwave in less than 4 minutes (any longer and you start to get email and RSS feed checking withdrawal). For drinks: ...
