Large tidal flats often have channels in them where the water drains when the tide goes out. One might reasonably call these rivers, and they can move around. They could also very well be a mile or more from the sandy part of the beach.

What's weird is that somehow this comic is another one of those "get out of my head" comics. The past few days I've been using my computer to render a zoom animation on a 3d fractal. Same deal; wait 30 minutes, see a very small change, rinse, repeat.

I don't think it's panning; only the left side of the frame is moving. The shoreline doesn't seam to shift; looks to me like the left side is getting compressed. If you look at the far left, there's a little patch of sand coming in from outer frame. It seams to shift relative to the sand below it. I...
