Re: Grade Inflation in the US

Being part of the group of kids at MIT or Caltech and associating with people who've done really great things would make me a lot happier. But should I really sacrifice these precious years for that? I'll still be successful in the end. Is pushing myself now to do things I wouldn't otherwise do wor...

Re: Awesome Student Quotes

"So, uh, how do you enter a matrix in MATLAB?" -The night before a relatively large fluids homework was due.

If you've never used MATLAB, it's essentially a high level programming language that is very matrix-centric. Entering a matrix in MATLAB is literally the first thing you learn.

Re: Is carnegie mellon a good cs university?

Three of the smartest people I know are at CMU (one is actually in their CS program), so I think it's pretty good. It is a relatively difficult school to get into though, harder than a place like RPI or Purdue, but easier than MIT or Harvard.

Re: College Tips

That's definitely important. My biggest regret from Freshmen year was buying all my textbooks from the school's store. (I was worried about not having the textbooks when classes started and about getting the wrong ones.) I had to buy almost all of them brand new, so I was spending about $600-$700 p...

Re: Impact of Eagle Scout. (should i continue or not?)

I assume that most employers aren't going to be impressed with an Eagle scout unless they were an Eagle themselves. It's likely akin to being in a fraternity; it's a social networking accomplishment and it's boon to you while seeking employment is dependent upon whoever is reviewing your resume. I ...

Re: xkcd-ians Recommendations for Graphing Calcs...

From his original post, it seems that what squareroot is going into at the moment is high school. So while he probably has no idea (and probably shouldn't have any idea) what field he's going into in his life or in higher education, it makes sense to get the calculator that will serve him best thro...

Re: Quadruple majoring

A lot of people say that quadruple majoring is silly. I completely agree; I'm a silly individual. That said, I'm not going to waste my life. I still prefer a social life over a chemistry degree, and undergraduate research opportunities over a physics degree. I will still double major, though. Howev...

Re: Calculus in engineering education

I'm curious how you get a job these days without an A in calculus. I come from RPI (the proverbial upper middle class), and apparently known for not inflating grades. I have senior friends with 3.5+ that can't find a job (that they like, and they aren't too picky). How do you find these jobs with si...

Re: Engineering Degree Online?

I think it depends. While all engineers at RPI must take Physics I & II, Calc I & II (and sometimes III), and Differential Equations, we don't really share classes with physics majors after that point. Again, this probably depends on the size of the department, at a smaller school, or a less...

Re: Engineering Degree Online?

Engineering schools can be kind of obnoxious when it comes to transferring credits. While most of them teach by and large the same concepts, it can be impossible to transfer the credits because of semantics. If you take a statics class at a community college, your ABET college may not take it becaus...

Re: Exams you've actually enjoyed sitting.

I went to a relatively small boarding high school, and the 1st year english composition class was taught by the Dean of Academics because they were short an English teacher that year. The vocabulary portion of our final was 100 sentences poking fun at the faculty. There were lots of laughs in that o...

Re: Planning to be a Math/Music Major

College courses *are not* high school courses (generally). If you come from a top tier school (and if you have a boatload of AP credit, you might) then college might be similar to high school. I took 16 credits my first semester in college, and had more free time then I could possibly use. 2nd semes...

Re: College Acceptances and a Withdrawn Course

For what its worth... Multivariable Calculus the easiest "real" math class I took. If you can't handle multivariable, you'll want to take a hard look at your study habits in order to succeed at a top tier school. Seeing as you got into a nice group of schools, I have a hard time seeing why...

I used the Princeton Review AP Study book. I had a terrible, terrible teacher and I got a 4 on Mech and a 5 on E&M. I learned mostly through the book.

Re: AP Physics or AP Chemistry?

Take AP Chem. I was lucky enough to take AP Calc BC, AP Physics C (Mech & E&EM), AP Chemistry and a couple of other ones that aren't as exciting. While the Chemistry AP is *hard*, people are really bad at taking it. When I left the test I thought my performance was worthy of a 3. I got a 5. ...

Re: School makes me hate math

This depends a good deal on what the "Math" is. I mostly enjoyed Calc BC, Diffy Q was a blast, and Multivariable is awesome. That said, I HATED LIN ALG. I don't mind the applied linear algebra, I think that's pretty neat, and I know that has oodles of applications. But proving that the moo...

Re: AP tests

I took AP Chem and AP Calc BC and got a 5 on both. AP Calc was relatively straightforward. We spent the last month doing 2 practice prompts per class, plus 2 practice prompts for homework due each class. We had weekly multiple choice packets, and two full AP practice tests. If you just drill, you'll...
