Re: 1408: "March of the Penguins"

OK, so how did they die? Someone please tell me. Well you see, black hat guy □□□□□ □□□ □□□□□ □□□□□□□ □□ □ □□□□ □□□□□ □□□ □□□□□ □□□□ □□□ □□□, and THAT is why the penguins are all dead. Tragic, really. I hope that was of some help. :D As I was just reading about Markov chains the other day (in regard...

I wonder how long it would last if he continued until one of the newpix hashes to the target value from the Externalities comic's challenge.

Re: 1190: "Time"

And to think that way back, at the beginning of Time, there were people who thought it was an april fool's thing... To think there were people who said that those guys were fools to assume the comic would go on until april 1st... And yet here we are, still waiting for it. Perhaps Randall has figure...

Re: 1190: "Time"

The eventual 'Finished' Bible could maybe be special printed and one sent to Randall... One page at a time. Agreed! I would suggest that each page end in the middle of a critically important sentence. Just for keeping up the suspense. Perhaps even more evil would be to omit page numbers and send th...

Re: 1197: "All Adobe Updates"

The one that really annoys me is when the updater lies to you: "New Java update available. Click here to install." followed by "You already have the latest version of Java"... I am fairly certain this is due to Java maintaining both an x86 and x64 build. The auto-updater gets tr...

Re: 1195: "Flowchart"

This comic reminds of a Roller Coaster Tycoon park that I created a few years ago. I designed the park so that the visitors could enter, but could not leave. I also made all of the attractions, food and drink free. I guess I was more evil in my parks. While I also often made rides and concessions f...

Re: 1193: Externalities

btw, does anybody know why this comic's font doesn't render correctly in IE10? it just shows the text in times new roman. i thought ie10 was supposed to be standards compliant. Same with Firefox if you use http://www.xkcd.com/1193/, but it renders ok if you use http://xkcd.com/1193/ . In IE10, you ...

Re: 1193: Externalities

. . . Although if you are going to count the bits in the xor of 1024 bits you won't get much faster than looping through the 128 bytes, for each byte do a table lookup into a 256 byte table containing the number of one bits in that byte, and bailing out early if the total exceeds the target that yo...

Re: 1193: Externalities

Does anyone have a better idea for what to use? My guess is that the string to beat are four random words ... That was the general approach I took, when someone brought up "correct horse battery staple." It seemed too obvious at first, but then again the shear number of four-word phrases ...

My personal worst goes to "basics set ominous schlep" which scores 622 (equivalent to 402).
