Re: Your outlandish TV/movie concepts?

Well, the Sassanids were gone by the 13th century in our timeline, but the Byzantines weren't quite yet... Anyway, I'm curious as to what happened to Mohammed and Islam. Personally, if I wanted to expunge Mohammed from history without simply declaring he didn't exist by fiat, I'd have Mecca be part...

Re: Your outlandish TV/movie concepts?

How about a fantasy-alternate history show: In a 13th century where the Sassanid Persians remain, propped up by the power of their fire-weilding magi and the Byzantines control the last of the legendary Roman steam powered battle mechs, a new threat emerges in the east. (spoiler alert: its the Mongo...

Re: Childhood (not so) crackpot theories

It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out why you can't make a lighter than air airship more efficient by filling it with a vacuum rather than Hydrogen or Helium, and it still makes my head hurt thinking about it.

Re: What kind of voice do you hear in your head when you read?

I definatley hear a voice when reading English, but I am somehow simultaneously aware of the fact that it does not exist, so I do not identify it with anyone's voice. When reading Chinese on the other hand, the voice is mine, except with way better pronunciation of tines than I actually have.

DNS Weirdness?

I am running a several year old (and probably dying) desktop with Windows XP, and I have lately been having two possibly related and strange problems. First of all, When trying to run certain online game clients, I get error messages saying in effect that the patch client failed to connect to any se...

Re: What drove you to the field you are studying?

I am honestly not sure why I hate Organic chemistry It probably has at least a little bit to do with the fact that I suck at it and it reminds me of why I hate Bio, which kind of starts a vicious cycle. I was always more attracted to the analytical and instrumental side of Chemistry in any case thou...

Re: Awesome videogame music?

"Still Alive," of course, from Portal, but much of Guild Wars's soundtrack is from Jeremy Soule and It's good. I always found the music from Guildwars to be a little bit too generic to listen to outside of the game, except for a few tracks from Eye of the North. To any fans of orchestral ...

Re: Odd dining experiences.

I was at a restaurant on some Aegean Island (think it was Hydra) and I ordered grilled octopus at a small restaurant. A few minutes later these two waiters from the restaurant walk out onto the beach below the terrace where I was sitting each carrying an octopus which they the proceed to beat agains...

Re: What drove you to the field you are studying?

I am currently a Chemistry major because I have always loved science and because chemistry was the science that I had the best experience with in High School. Thats not so say that I have not had several crises of opinion of chemistry, most recently when Organic Chemistry came really close to make m...

Re: Warhammer Online

WAR is awesome, but I have recently (as of a week or so ago) had this problem where when I try to launch the game, the patcher hangs and I get the error message The patch client was unable to retrieve the file [patcher.prod.sig] from the patch server. Please try the patch operation again in a short ...

Re: Other Languages You've Studied

Just two, maybe 3 but not really (see below). I spent 6 years of middle and high school studying Latin, mainly because it had no oral component. Now in college I am in my second semester of Chinese, which I can understand and read fine but I am horrible at speaking or writing. My mother also sent me...

Re: "Ouch" moments in school

There was obviously a mistake in the math did to find the uncertainty in my calibration curve, but in three days of searching every cell in the damned spreadsheet I never found it. Eventually the Prof just had me turn it in because he couldn't find the mistake either.

Re: Describe a game you think would be awesome

PS- One thing I just remembered. I want more multi-genre games. Example: Imagine a modern RTS similar to Command and Conquer, with a kind of hero-unit (or squad) function. In single-player games, the AI controls them and you give them rough commands which they generally follow. In multi-player games...

Re: Describe a game you think would be awesome

I want an MMO based on George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire Series. It would have to be done kind of like Matrix Online, where the major characters are played by GM's and can be interacted with.

Either that, or I want to Warhammer 40K MMO to finally come out.

Re: Sword of Truth TV Series

I have watched the first few episodes, and I still have mixed feelings. On one hand they got the visuals spot on in my opinion, and they are so far sticking to (most of) the major plot points of the first book. However, they have a huge plot hole related to the Book of Counted Shadows now, and they ...

Re: "Ouch" moments in school

So I get a take home exam in an Analytical Chemistry class, which I have all weekend to complete. I do the first few problems easily and then arrive at 5) (42 pts total) You have a 0.0100 M solution of phosphoric acid and a 0.0100 M solution of Na3PO4. How many mL or each do you need to make 100.0 m...
