Re: Why we are fat

Portion sizing is definitely a 21st century health issue I hope we legislate the HELL out of. Plates are too big, packaging does not actually split up servings, relative sizing is distorted, and quantity pricing incentives push towards long term health care costs. It should be illegal for a movie t...

Re: Your favourite calculator

I have an old TI-89 that I love, haven't tried much else besides it and the Ti-83/84 so I dont have much to compare it to.
It can do complex exponents, just tried it out.

Re: Religion: The Deuce

Since almost no one actually reads the texts in there original greek, does it matter that they are available? Since almost no one actually reads Einstein's original works, does it matter that they are available? Certainly. Various physicists read Einstein's works, and their interpretations and extr...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

The simplest explanation for a highly edited and truncated ancient text that lists the rise of a demi-god with super human abilities and a good word to spread is the simplest explanation? 'highly edited and truncated'? Please cite your sources :p I'm assuming that by truncated he maeans that there ...

Re: Human Rights Discussion

C.S. Lewis offers a strong argument to the contrary (first two paragraphs). We all argue about what's right and wrong, and we never argue about the fundamentals. When someone cuts in line, they don't say "I don't believe in waiting my turn" or, as Lewis puts it "To hell with your sta...

Re: Responsibility

I think that people are always responsible for their actions. If they were forced into said actions by a physical ailment, like the tumor the OP referenced, or a psychological disorder it was still some aspect of themselves that caused the person to commit their actions. I think that if someone was ...

Re: Human Rights Discussion

Humans don't have any rights beyond what they can force from others. It's not like there's some metaphysical Christmas list out in the ether. Objectively, rights are determined by those with the biggest sticks. I agree with this in essence. I don't think that there is anything that people have an i...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

. Here is a section from my Bible notes: According to Josephus, Quirinius was governor of Syria a.d. 6–7 and conducted a census in a.d. 6 (which Luke is aware of and mentions in Acts 5:37). But this cannot be the census Luke is referencing here, since it occurred after the death of Herod the Great ...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

So, I think - in the case of Christianity - there is enough evidence to consider my faith rational. Faith doesn't exist in a vacuum - if, for example, the gospels were conclusively found to be hoaxes then I'd have to rethink... but I very much doubt that's going to happen. I take from this that you...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

One thing that has always irritated me was how Christians could claim that there god is all-benevolent, there have been a number of accounts where god has acted in ways that are not benevolent in any way. For example in II Kings 2:23-24: And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up...

Re: Range voting

As a side note, It should be mentioned that Australia also has Compulsury voting, both for in country and out of country citizens. Every single citizen over the age of 18 must be registered with the Australian Electoral Comission, and there is a fine if you dont vote. This ensures that every adult ...

your friends are very close to banning you from watching movies with them because you are compelled to point out every scientific inaccuracy. I'm not going for my major in physics, just a minor but close enough.

Re: Israel

Why should it have been an 'Arab' state? As noted, arguments based on population figures "back then" are largely useless. At the time of partition, there was a significant Jewish presence in the region that was largely incompatible with the Arab populace. By the same argument why should i...

Re: Israel

I don't dispute that Jews have a right to live in Israel, I just think that they shouldn't have taken the UN resolution that partitioned Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. I disagree with this plan because it gave the Jews, who hadn't lived there in great numbers for over 1000 years, co...

Re: Israel

I agree with the people that are saying that the state of Israel shouldn't have been created in the way that it was but we can't just ship all the Jews off to Africa so we have to deal with the situation as it is now. The Palestinian conflict is a sticky situation to say the least and I think that i...

Re: Malcom Reynolds vs Han solo

I think Mal would win going by the fact that in the movies Han never showed any special prowess with guns, he showed his cleverness and ingenuity but his crowning moment with his pistol was shooting someone from about 3 feet away. However Mal has demonstrated his ability with a sword and pistol many...

Re: Capitalism and Poverty

I think that capitalism allows people to blame the poor for their predicament, claiming that they "didn't work hard enough" and that seems like that is what many people in this believe. While this is true in many or even most cases there are also times where the rich/wealthy use their cont...
