Re: A Physics question about gravity

I've got to interject that Gnulpie is a little confused about the Cosmological Constant. Modern physics confirms it to have been an error, not vice versa. It was added to relativity to prevent it from describing an expanding universe, which we now know is what actually exists. Einstein's original th...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hey guys! Lets see here... I'm a high school student from Georgia. My academic interests are mainly in the biology/chemistry department (hoping to major in biochemistry in college). I'll read anything, though I have a particular fondness for biographies. Also, I'm a wrestler.

Shakespeare Challenge

April 23 is Shakespeare's observed birthday. In honor of the Bard, I'm trying to get as many people as possible to try to speak entirely in iambic pentameter for the duration of that day. The idea seems to be getting a very early positive response from my classmates, and I know there are bound to be...

Re: Odd (Yet Meaningful) Essay Topics

When asked to write and present my own Declaration of Independence From _______ in lit, I chose to declare my independence from cutlery. Outlining the evil inherent in the use of silverware was a hell of a lot of fun for me and, just as importantly, made for a half-enjoyable presentation for my clas...

Re: Best. Death. Ever.

So... I'm pretty sure we all agree that we need to start collecting funds to build a statue or something for this guy, right? I mean, if anybody has ever deserved to be memorialized...

Re: Improving the American school system

I think the most fundamental, important problem with American education is our society's low value of education and educators. The American taxpayer, in general, expects no more than average academic performance from his child and therefore requires nothing more than mediocrity from his child's inst...

Re: Society, its definition, purpose, and adequacy

It seems to me that society has been quite effective, given its original purpose of promoting the survival and propagation of the human species. The whole concept of a "happy life" is really just icing on the cake when you look at things on their most basic level. Even assuming that the ba...

Re: Books you never finished

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea- It is such a great story/concept, but the insane profusion of novella-length fish descriptions and other such unnecessary digressions REALLY got to me after a while. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich- It is a great book, actually fairly readable, but it is crazy time...
