That's a horrible way to define a matrix. It's a fine way to define a matrix, depending on your context. In particular, if you want to deal with higher-dimensional matrices, then that's a very good definition to use, since you can just slap on d cartesian products, where d is the dimension you want...

There's always Taylor polynomials. I think most calculators use Taylor polynomials or some variant to calculate trigonometric functions. The Taylor polynomial for that function is 1 + [ln2(x-69)/12]
