Re: 2018 Midterm Elections Coverage

The problem with drawing competitive districts is that it mashes together people who aren't normally in the same political jurisdictions and splitting people who are.

Re: 2018 Midterm Elections Coverage

I think that if I was in charge, I'd probably go for Compact (borders). It feels like the least gerrymanderable way to go.

Re: Trump presidency

Clarifying question, Chabad messianism believes that Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson is the Messiah. Are they Jewish? If so, then why not ones who think that Jesus was the Messiah?

Question - how do people know this is posted from an iPhone? Like, I don't doubt that, but I don't know twitter enough.

Metadata that is sent with a tweet. Such as date, location, and type of device that sent it.

I think it had something to do with classified information. A crime that doesn't require intent btw. Long as he doesn't put anything sensitive on the unsecured phone, I don't think it's a problem.

Re: Trump presidency

I really like George Orwell's Notes on Nationalism and that's my primary lens when talking about it. After reading and thinking about it, in America we have nationalists on both the right and the left.

Re: The Darker Side of the News

I mainly mentioned it because of the question about the reaction. Given that he is apparently supported by an established Church, and it appears to originally established by a group of people from diverse Jewish and Christian denominations, it would seem to me likely that they would have a favorable...

Re: The Darker Side of the News

I'll be interested to see if, which, and how any religious leaders weigh in on this. No More Deaths, the group that he's a part of, is faith-based. From their site, "Since 2008 we have been an official ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson." From wikipedia, "No More...

Re: Seneca Valley - False accusations and how to handle them

Cases like one are among the reasons that I was skeptical of the Kavanaugh accusers and that multiple accusers made it more likely. The girls at a high school of perhaps a few thousand were motivated by mere "I don't like him." Thus when there are tens of millions who don't like someone an...

Re: News in brief

From https://www.verywellhealth.com/the-risks-of-donating-bone-marrow-2252482 According to the National Marrow Donor Program, 2.4% of people who donate bone marrow experience a serious complication. Very few bone marrow donors suffer any long-term complications from their donation. Around the world,...

Re: Trump presidency

And how serious would you rate each charge? Me? I believe in completely open borders. The fact of the matter is that having open borders within the US is a huge part of our economic success. I think that open borders in Europe has helped them as well. I personally don't have a problem with immigrat...

Far as I can tell, there are two crimes. One being the original charge, the second is that they are an illegal immigrant.

Re: Trump presidency

Nielsen v. Preap just heard oral arguments, so we don't know how he's going to vote just yet. To me as someone who is very pro-immigration, it seems like a pretty cut and dried due process problem with the law.

Even in a job interview, for her accusation to reflect on him, she has to prove that he did something. She failed to do that.

Re: Trump presidency

A few years ago, I had a close friend of mine who was raped. After that incident, I thought about the issue a lot. One of the things that bugged me was that if I was on a jury, I wouldn't be able to convict him. After some research, I considered a common counterfactual that was a lot more clean-cut ...

Re: Trump presidency

He is accused of forceful groping and inappropriate contact. WAY more than 5% of men have done that, I guarantee you. Yet people seem to be absolutely certain of more than that. They seem to be absolutely certain that he is a rapist. However, even if we lower the seriousness of the charge to forcef...

Thesh, were you responding to me? Quick question, do you think he's lying (or exaggerating his abstinence)about his drinking? I don't think he's answered untruthfully, but I do think that he's certainly exaggerating. My read is that his drinking during high school and college really probably isn't s...

Re: Trump presidency

Ok, so now that I've looked at entirely too many hours of Ford and Kavanaugh. I don't think Ford should prevent Kavanaugh from getting on the Supreme Court. Ford said that there were at least five other people there, none of them remember anything like the incident in question. Memories are plastic ...

Re: Trump presidency

If Swetnick comes through with witnesses, it's not he said she said anymore. If they don't get Swetnick and her witnesses up to the Senate to give evidence before they vote, then it will be a horrid miscarriage of justice and I'll be with the lynch mob that says he shouldn't be on the court. (That s...

Re: Trump presidency

After reading Swetnick's statement, I'm moving Ford to be a supporting statement towards that. Ford has issues with non-specificity and such which are helpfully moved along by Swetnick. Assuming for a moment that she is able to produce the witnesses that she mentions, I'm not sure that Kavanaugh's c...

Re: Trump presidency

Democrats' chances of taking the Senate are already pretty slim; it's hard for there to be anything that would make them meaningfully worse than they already are. 30% isn't slim and there are plenty of things they could do to make things worse for themselves. What do you mean, "actionable"...

Re: Trump presidency

Something that concerns me, most of the people I know who voted for Trump held their nose to do so. Why? Supreme Court picks that went their way. If Kavanaugh isn't confirmed before the election then it is entirely possible that the SC seat he is going for will become the topic of the election. That...

Here is the thing though, there are arguments that we have captured non-human intelligences on video. For example, on JN1 during an Obama visit there was an odd man at 36 seconds in vy2wQCDbbyQ youtube video.
