Re: 1082: “Geology”

Yep, a lot of female geologists out there... :P Do you think there aren't? Citation on that? If palaeontologists count, I think the majority of the geologists I've met are women. Yes, we count. While some have degrees in Biology, most of us are Geologists. Can't do the necessary stratigraphy withou...

Re: 1021: "Business Plan"

As someone who does a lot of work with our local Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Centers, can I tell you how much I loathe the phrase, "elevator pitch"? So I adored the title text this morning. Almost did a spit take with my tea onto my laptop. :)

Re: 0954: "Chin-Up Bar"

Sorry - as someone who once stopped this type of thing from happening on a shorter DC Metro escalator (Wheaton Station being the 70 m escalator), I don't find this funny. Some woman was too busy gossiping with her friend to hop her kid's monster stroller over the end plate at the top of the escalato...

Re: 0881: "Probability"

Randall - Lost my Mom 6 months ago. Her 5 year probability was 5% - there was no 10 year probability (she hung on for 13 months). My best friend's father has the numbers you posted. I would have - and still would - given anything for those numbers. Because the higher the number, the better likeliho...

Re: 0806: Tech Support

Oh thank you. I recently called AT&T to ask if there was a problem with the DSL in their area. I had to go through 90 minutes of tech support calling, going through EVERY aspect of the script. (At least the tech on the phone stopped being pedantic after a while and said "Oh, you're technica...

Re: "Pore Strips" discussion (#777)

*sigh* Usual lurker, gotta pipe up. Pore Strips don't *cure* acne. They don't claim to cure acne, they claim to remove dirt/build-up from your pores. Which they do. But you have to use them properly, and I know tons of people who don't. (Then again, most people don't have sensitive skin, so they don...

Re: "Movie Narrative Charts" Discussion

I do love the comic, but... I'm not sure this is quite What Tufte Would Do. I can't quite put my finger on what I'd do differently, and it is almost there, but... mm. Heh - my first thought exactly. Except Tufte didn't actually draw the Napoleon map, he just greatly approves of it. Charles Joseph M...

Oh thank you for the laugh. I've been developing web sites since 1994 and fought the GeoCities taint for a looooong time. I almost laughed tea through my nose...

Also, thank you for sparing us the MIDI. Those were always the worst.

Re: "Matrix Revisited" Discussion

You know what I remember?

I went to go see it after being told by everyone I should go see it.

Then I thought - "Well damn, nobody told me this is a Laurence Fishburne movie, not a Keanu Reeves movie - how stupid is the marketing department?"

Re: "Students" Discussion

Oh thank you. I nearly had my morning tea coming out of my nose reading this. I graduated 20 years ago and have this dream at least twice a year.

Normally I just lurk, but between the Don Quixote reference on Monday and this today, XKCD has been a much-brighter-than-usual spot in my week.
