Re: 2048: "Curve-Fitting"

Is there a trick to the hidden text punchline? Lorentz was in theoretical physics, especially electromagnetism. Cauchy was a civil engineer working on a canal for Napoleon. Neither seem especially disreputable.

Re: 1791: "Telescopes: Refractor vs Reflector"

Methinks you guys didn't "get it". Vampires do not reflect in mirrors. If there was one out there, this would in fact be true. There is a mirror in the eyepiece of the refractor... Nope, if it's a decent refactor it's a prism. Most astronomers use mirrored diagonals, and they can do an ex...

Re: 1400: "D. B. Cooper"

The age doesn't work. The hijacking was in 1971 and witnesses reported Cooper was in his mid-40s. That would make him in his late 80s now. Even the oldest estimates of Wiseau's age are at least 10 years younger than that.

Re: 1078: "Knights"

Gambit means a type of chess opening http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambit. Actually this is not a gambit because nothing is sacrificed. But it's just combining a chess term with a real battle term. It's totally a gambit: White sacs both his knights. It probably worked about about as well for him as ...

For a book-length treatment, try D'Imperio, Mary E. : The Voynich Manuscript - an elegant enigma, First published by the National Security Agency, and reprinted by the Aegean Park Press, 1978. She does an excellent job presenting what's known and suspected about the manuscript. The book is not exact...

Wow. I spent a great deal of free time looking at and tracking down everything written about the Voynich Manuscript about 20-25 years ago. It's an amazing manuscript. At that point, there were no hi-res scans, and we had to make do with mediocre black and white microfilm (unless you could visit Yale...
