Re: Team Respect: Bringing Respect to PAX and beyond.

To be fair, they are correct in that I was simply posting a re-hashed argument that has been done to death over the course of the original debate which sprang from the comic. But then, since the same could be said for almost every point on this thread, I felt reasonably safe in posting. My aim was n...

Re: Team Respect: Bringing Respect to PAX and beyond.

I never understood what the problem was with the dickwolves thing. The comic wasn't even making a joke about rape, it was about the irrationalty of quest objectives in MMOs. When people objected to the comic, they post an apology which also raised the valid point that what the people were complainin...

Re: Pope calls Christians the most persecuted

Perusing the intertubes, it appears that the pope's comments were (at least in part) prompted by a report stating that "75% of the death linked to hate crimes of religious nature concern people of Christian faith". Admittedly I can only find heavily edited versions of the full statement on...

Re: Pope calls Christians the most persecuted

Where Christian symbols and traditions are being done away with, its not because there's some Jewish or Hindi belief jostling for "priority" as you put it. They are being replaced with nothing. Yeah, that's what happens when no one's symbols and traditions take priority. Everyone is left ...

The ban was there because... well... umm... (goes and cries) But seriously, the whole secular shift is a relatively recent thing. Just because 20/50/100 years ago Christians held a lot more sway in well... everything, doesn't mean that the amount of scorn being poured on them and everything accociat...

Re: Pope calls Christians the most persecuted

I'm sorry, I admit in the US that things are more biased, but its not just a matter of nebulous public support out of habit. Its also about the general trend in Western culture to play down the achievements of Christianity. Christian groups may kick up a fuss that Barack Obama (as a professed Christ...

My more general point is that although they are the majority, culturally they are no longer dominant. Most of the effects Christianity has had on the world are now either reviled if they contradict the general view of society or subsumed (Christmas, elements of law and moral teaching etc) into the s...

And in response to Izawwlgood, the fact that you think there needs to be a safe space from Christianity is indicative of a mentality where Christians are considered the enemy. No, just one where they're considered an oppressive and ever-present majority. Because they are. In the majority, I mean. A...

Umm, increased the rate of child molestation? 10,667 cases of child molestation by priests in the USA over 52 years. Divide 10,667 by 52 and you get ~205. But there are over 3 million report of child abuse in the USA every year. 7.6% of them are sexual, so thats 228,000 cases of sexual child abuse i...

Re: Pope calls Christians the most persecuted

I'm not in any meaningful sense of the word a Christian, but I can't help feeling that the pope has the right of this. When referring to the western world, he's talking about a general perception that the religious are somehow deluded and irrational in their beliefs. Hence, anything they say or do c...

The only MMO I can think of fitting your (dare I say masochistic) expectations that I've had personal experience with is Wurm Online. I've kept Dumbo rats for many years and always found them very happy to be picked up and handled. Sorry if it's something obvious that I should know. I'm not a maths genius by any means. Read the text before the math. a/b = c if and only if a = cb . This isn't a deep theorem or anything, it's how division is defined . If we believe (as did OP's friend) that 1/0 = \infty , then we also believe t...

If 1/0 = \infty , then \infty\times0 = 1 (this is the definition of division). So: \begin{eqnarray} 0+0 & = & 0 \\ \infty\times(0+0) & = & \infty\times0 \\ \infty\times0 + \infty\times0 & = & \infty\times0 \\ 1 + 1 & = & 1 \\ 2 & = & 1 \end{eqnarray} ...
