Re: ITT: We make xkcd slightly worse.

This is so terrible and distasteful that I'm hesitant to post this, but I can't have been the only one that thought this when I saw today's comic:

Re: What-If 0145: "Fire From Moonlight"

I'm still confused a bit here as to why you wouldn't be able to take, say, 5 ideal convex lenses refracting different points of the moon's reflection and overlap their outputs to get a theoretical max of 500 degrees. It seems to violate the basic thermodynamics argument presented (the cumulative tot...

Re: 1518: "Typical Morning Routine"

During the night Tasker places my phone in silent mode. Only the alarm clock is allowed to make noise. Just to clarify for the sake of iOS users, Android has independent volumes for the ringer/notifications, media sounds (music/videos/maps, basically misc) and alarms, so an Android phone can be sil...

Re: Apple bans Pebble Smartwatch App "SeaNav" from its app s

The problem with describing Pebble as piggybacking off the App Store/advertising/competing with the Apple Watch as fair reasons for Apple's policy is that they...aren't. The apps that mention Pebble mention it as a spec, not an ad; they don't have a big notice in the description saying "Hey! Ev...

Re: Apple bans Pebble Smartwatch App "SeaNav" from its app s

They're also the first smartwatch... While Pebble were major players, and probably did kick off interest in smart watches, they were not the first. The earliest I know of to have similar functionality to the Pebble was the Sony Ericsson LiveView, which was released 2-3 years before the first Pebble...

Re: 1489: "Fundamental Forces"

As someone who stopped physics at end of high school, I'd like to join the chorus of enthusiastic head bobbing about particularly the explanation of the weak nuclear force. If magnetism by itself is not a fundamental force because it's been reduced to electromagnetism, why is electromagnetism consid...

Re: [Mech eng.] Feasibility of an omnidirectional wheelchair

Note that the big wheels on existing wheelchairs are important though: it makes it possible to bump the chair up a stair or two, or to cross smooth unpaved areas. Existing electric wheelchairs with only smaller wheels are more limited in where they can go. However, in a SF story set in ships and st...

Re: Creating a Permanent (Non-Live) Linux Mint USB

I think Windows only looks at the first partition on a USB drive, so if you remake it with the first 16GB as a plain FAT32 partition and the rest as, say ext2 (more Linux friendly than FAT32 but no journal to perform lots of writes to the drive) it should show up.
