2174: "First News Memory"

https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/first_news_memory.png Title text: Psychology researchers say our 'flashbulb' memories of big events can be unreliable, but I clearly remember watching live on CNN as Challenger crashed into and destroyed the Berlin Wall. Mine was also the Challenger explosion when I was...

Re: 1972: "Autogyros"

I first heard about autogyros from reading "The Shadow" pulp novels from the 30s - the Shadow flew one pretty regularly. I think trans-Atlantic once even (which is absurd, but pulp heroes did that kind of thing pretty regularly.)

What's an isolated tribe? Sounds like a 20th-century concept.

Re: 1492: "Dress color"

A lot of the "gold/brown" perception is from the black panel at the top of the dress. Which is SHEER (look at the Roman dress as linked by others). You're seeing the wearer's *skin color* through a partially-transparent black fabric, and lighting makes it even yellower. (And for the person...

Re: 1458: Small Moon

Even if the Death Star is under 160km, I'm pretty sure it is at least 12.6km based on the trench run. IIRC, the first Death Star was 120km in diameter, the second Death Star was 160km. (I can't remember my source offhand - it may have been one of the sourcebooks for the original Star Wars RPG by We...

Re: 1435: "Presidential Alert"

I used to wonder whether Edward R Murrow would tell his kids, "Good night, and good luck." If someone wished me good luck before turning off the lights and leaving me to sleep, I probably would have been terrified. You think that's bad, imagine being forced to recite this *every single ni...
