Re: What-if 0111: "All the Money"

When I was a kid, I had a book called All the Money in the World by Bill Brittain (wiki says it's from 1979). Putting aside the mechanical issues of having money, it basically presented the idea that money is meaningless if you had all of it. Pretty mind-blowing for a 7-year-old.

Re: 1056: Felidae

Argh. Too slow on my first opportunity for the first post! Am I the only one who thinks that "mountain lion" is pretty lame in comparison to ALL of "panther", "puma", and "cougar"? You are not. I think panther wins this game as coolest name of well-known cats...

Anyway, this reminded me of the dismal sales of the "Nova" Ford car in Mexico. Ermmm... You mean Chevy, and this actually didn't happen. Snopes . The word "nova" means "new" in Latin, and more Spanish speakers are likely smart enough to see the connection to the word &...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

Increasingly likely? According to whom? Everything I've read says the opposite. I'm saying that we are clos er to instant communication than we are to FTL travel. There are serious people actually discussing how to make it happen, whether or not we understand how entanglement works. Put differently...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

Oh, people might be talking , but you'll find no shortage of scientists (as opposed to 'futurists') who dispute vociferously the exact nature and mechanism of this 'effect'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_entanglement Fair point. I should say that this effect has been replicated in laboratory...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

The other really funny misconception is, that Ender and his sister live for hundreds of years due to relativistic effects and humankind possesses some magical over-lightspeed instant communication method, but still there is virtually no technological progress in all that time... If you consider the...
