Re: Bullfighting, Animal Rights & Eating Meat

The problem with questions like this is that it's not black and white. It's a problem of sliding scales, with about a thousand axes. If you think killing animals is bad, do you necessarily have to do everything in your power to not kill anything? Good luck. You'd pretty much have to disconnect yours...

Re: Video card problem (I think?)

It does have a port to plug in a monitor, but it doesn't seem to be working. I can plug a monitor into it, but it doesn't do anything; the laptop screen still just comes on, and the monitor does nothing. It's possible my friend fluked it; I remember once, not too long after it first did this, I got ...

Yeah, I know what you mean. No, nothing at all. Press the power button, hear things whir and hum for a few seconds, and then the screen turns on, just full of gray and black bars, which then fade into a solid gray.

Video card problem (I think?)

My laptop hasn't been working for over half a year now. When I start it up, I just get this gray screen with horizontal black bars of varying widths all over it, which just fades to a solid gray over five or ten seconds or so. A friend of mine told me it was a problem with my video card drivers, and...

Someone can think I'm unattractive all they want, I don't care. What I have a problem with is somebody jumping to the conclusion that I'm unhealthy, that I don't manage my diet or exercise well, or that my weight is a sign of laziness, when in reality I spend many hours a week at the gym, I eat wel...

Re: Ideal fat level?

I've always found 2 factors the most important as far as physical attractiveness in men goes (at least for me, and probably in general): Muscle mass, and body fat. Really big, strong, fat guys are not attractive. Really lean, skinny, weak guys are not attractive. Guys who are strong, but still lean...

Just curious what the general opinion of this dude is. I signed up for this online book-club thing on another forum I post on, and the first book is Angels and Demons. Re: John McCain's VP pick is Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska

The thing about Palin is, a vote for McCain is practically a vote for Palin. As president, that is. I mean, honestly, how many people really expect the man to survive four more years? Granted, his death probably isn't the most probable outcome . . . but I doubt it's far off from 50/50. He's 78 years...

Okay, you're right, this isn't the place for that debate. I just wanted to make sure I was understanding that correctly, because until now, I don't believe I've ever even heard of anyone who supported a woman's right to an abortion, up to and including the day before delivery.

And if she were pro-choice, then this would all be consistent: her right to do with her body what she chooses is more important than the fetus's continued existence. If they're saying they plan to get the same grade as before, I wouldn't think that'd really make sense if they got a poor grade the first time. If they did poorly orig...

Re: How bad would a mugging be...

You're changing the scope of the argument. First it was just muggers, now it's repeat muggers, and you're also now assuming that they're willing to kill people. The whole process of mugging someone is based on you being willing to kill them, and demonstrating that fact by brandishing weaponry. Othe...

Damnit! What's the problem? If the answer is similar to what I posted but a little different, that would just be because I remembered it incorrectly. The bottom line is, you should just factor the denominator(s) before trying to cross-multiply. If you're having that much difficulty factoring, use t...

I'm sorry, that was a mistake. It's supposed to be 12+x-x 2 Ahh, there we go. It says that it does, in fact, factor to the answer you were looking for. Woops, nevermind. Re: Help with . . . factoring, I think?

Mathematica says your original expression doesn't factor to anything more than a simple combination of fractions while keeping the denominators. 12 + x + x 2 doesn't factor any further over the Reals. I'm sorry, that was a mistake. It's supposed to be 12+x - x 2 . What's this Mathematica, though? I...

Re: Help with . . . factoring, I think?

Well, it would be subtracting instead of adding since it's originally a subtraction problem, not addition. . . . or am I somehow missing something obvious? (3)(x 2 -9) = 3x 2 -27; (2)(12+x-x 2 ) = 24+2x-2x 2 , gives (3x 2 -27)-(24+2x-2x 2 ); multiply everything in the second term by negative one and...

Re: Help with . . . factoring, I think?

First off, I'm going to assume you meant -12 rather than +12, since that matches your work and the answer in the book. The short answer is that your numerator is wrong. You left a 5 off the x 2 term. The long answer is that you should factor the denominators before cross-multiplying. They have a co...
