Re: Awesome Teacher Quotes

My favorite teacher in the world once told me "The only thing you ever have to do in this world is die. Everything else is a choice."

10 years later i take it with me.

Re: Cool games on the interweb redux

Utopia, a text based, team based, real time strategy mid-evil fantasy game. I had a lot of fun with my kingdom for years until we all disbanded one by one. Very addictive.

Career tests

Anyone know some good sites where i could take some tests to find out what kind of career my personality would best be suited for? I know theres a crap-ton on google, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any tried-tested and true ones out there.

Re: Cool games on the interweb redux

This isn't a flash game, but its a small MMO that i think some people might like.

Astonia

And yes i know flash games are the preference, but the OP didn't totally exclude small .exe files.

Re: Newbie Advice

I guess i lied about that being my last question (I seem to be doing that a lot) I downloaded the compiler and editor from Java's site (the bundle package including NetBeans), but then I went to the the Stanford's site, and they want me to use Eclipse instead of Netbeans. Is there a significant diff...

Re: Newbie Advice

Okay well i guess my last question before i strike it out on my own is what tools would i need? or better yet, what tools would you suggest for me to learn C++ or Java? Way back when i was taking an HTML tutorial, i was able to just use notepad, but i would imagine that would not work with C++ or Ja...

Re: Newbie Advice

Well i think you're right about actually sitting down with Java and hashing it out on my own, but as you said there are a lot of garbage tutorials out there. Would you happen to know of any off the top of your head that aren't terrible? How about full courses from some of the best computer science ...

Re: Newbie Advice

Indeed, programming can definitely be self taught? Maybe you could try doing a java tutorial to see how you get on? It helps if you have instructive projects to do, though. A lot of the online tutorials are total crud. I'd recommend trying some of the project euler ideas, or coming up with somethin...

Re: Newbie Advice

If all you are aiming for is the type of games on Armor games, just learn programming in your spare time. I could make games comparable to some of those flash games at the end of my high school years. The not so good ones, at least, and not counting artwork, since I suck at drawing. The better ones...

Re: Newbie Advice

We'll at the moment, I don't think there are any colleges in Connecticut that have Game Design as a major, at least i know my school doesn't offer it. So what kind of course work would you suggest that I do so i could transfer to a school which does offer the degree?

Newbie Advice

My end game goal right now is to learn how to make flash or java based games, much like what Armor Games produces, or maybe even client based games. I'm new to the computer science realm, and I haven't even started relative course work into the field yet, so I suppose what i am looking for is a dire...

Advice on a new laptop

(Doesn't new as in the latest thing out) I need to find a durable laptop, something that will be able to handle light use over at least four years, has a nice warranty and isn't totally expensive.

Anyone have some ideas?

Re: Do we have any educators in the house?

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my post! I feel as though I have some sort of direction to take now. I have a neighbor helping me figure out all the red tape. She is an amazing lady, I must say. She is going on 50 years old, and is starting now to get her BA in education so she can ...

Re: Do we have any educators in the house?

I suppose its worth mentioning that i wan't to become a high school English teacher in Connecticut. Heh. Talking to your old high school teachers is the best place to start--you could even ask if they freshly graduated teachers you could have a chat to about what it was like getting through the cou...

Do we have any educators in the house?

I'm making the switch between a degree in Biological studies to Education, and i was wondering if anyone in the education field have some advice for me regarding what my first steps should be. Sites to visit, people to talk to, courses to take - anything would be appreciated. I suppose its worth men...
