I think that keyboard shortcuts are definitely faster than using the mouse. I have my Caps lock key mapped to Control so I can the keyboard shortcuts without moving my hands out of home row position. I started off using VIM as my editor but have recently moved over to Emacs. It is a much better editor. Emacs is extremely customizable and has the ability to do almost anything. If you are used to the VI key bindings then viper-mode with vimpulse works great. VIM is great for editing text but Emacs...

I am using XMonad right now and it is a very nice WM. I have conky piped into dzen2 to provide a very nice status bar.
It is a very customizable setup.
