Re: 0808: The Economic Argument

GPS transmitters and receivers don't have to account for relativity, except to the extent that relativity begets the finiteness of the speed of light and GPS calculations all depend on a finite speed of light. OK, maybe they COULD take into account relativity, but the error is small enough that the...

Re: 0808: The Economic Argument

I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure that you don't need quantum electrodynamics (that is, relativistic quantum field theory of electrodynamics) to do modern semiconductor circuit design. You definitely need quantum mechanics, and you'll maybe need to be comfortable with field-theoretic calcul...

Re: Scientific Method

Science is one of two enterprises: Trying to break theories with new data, or trying to find theories that arent broken by the available data. I disagree. Lots of science is just data taking without a particular theory in mind. Using my previous example, we decoded the human genome not so that we c...

Re: Scientific Method

I agree with AFedchuck, the scientific method is largely a fiction. The problem is that the scientific method defines science far too narrowly. Scientists generally do three things: they observe new phenomena (or look for new phenomena to observe), make precision measurements, and they make and veri...
