Re: Velociraptor Awareness Day

You idiots!! Raptors OWN facebook!!! You are giving your names to the enemy! Close your doors and windows, that may give you a few more minutes to live...and always remember: If your neighbors run at 10 m/s and they do not know fear, they are probably raptors. Oh... Oh god... I... I had no idea... ...

Re: Chemistry experiment

Might I point you to the Briggs-Rauscher Oscillating Reaction? It's one of my favorites, but your lab might not have everything you need. I would certainly ask about it, as it's a great reaction to show the importance of rates and equilibrium.

I think I may have just consumed comet... Apparently the spot on my coveralls that I just wiped my hand on had comet on it, which I then transferred to the slice of pizza I was eating. Not a lot, but still. That's why this pizza tasted so damn good...

Re: Perscription (sports) goggles?

Back before I was "old enough" (according to the parentals) to wear contact lenses, I had a pair of prescription lens goggles by a company called "Rec-Specs" that I used to play football in. I'm fairly certain that they still manufacture these, and you should be able to find a pa...

Re: Basic integration question

when you take the derivate of your new function, [imath]u[/imath], you differentiate with respect to x. Say [imath]u=e^{2x}[/imath]. To find [imath]du[/imath], take the derivative of u with respect to x. This comes to [imath]\frac{du} {dx}=2e^{2x}[/imath], or, [imath]du=2e^{2x}dx[/imath]

Re: Places that refuse to use IUPAC nomenclature...

Paraffin is used as a name for straight-chain alkanes. Paraffin wax is the generalized name for semi-solid alkanes between c=20 and c=40. Either way, I'm over it by now; I've been here a year... Just ranting a bit, maybe?

Re: Places that refuse to use IUPAC nomenclature...

Yes, this is all true. I am aware that gasoline is not a single hydrocarbon, but instead a vast array of hundreds if not thousands of compounds, and as such can not have a systematic name. But really, paraffin = alkane? Olefin = alkene? Grr, I'm just being picky, i know it's not a real issue... :(

Places that refuse to use IUPAC nomenclature...

... drive me up a wall. I manage the QC lab at a refinery here and i constantly hear terms such as "olefin", "naphtha", "paraffin", and others. I know for certain that this won't change around here, as this nomenclature was invented in the early days of petroleum refini...
