Re: Christian Bashing

As an atheist, I'm concerned mainly with posing questions to others that stimulate thinking and trying to help others see perspectives that they may not have before, not demeaning their beliefs or actually attempting to upset them in any way. With that said. I have never been able to have this type ...

Re: Firearms

A lot of what I would have said on this topic has already been thoroughly discussed so I won't wake the sleeping bears so I'll just keep this post within my personal experiences. I've had my Concealed Carry Permit since the day I was old enough to have it. My carry rate is as close to %100 as it can...

... 4) Republicans are racists. Perhaps... ...but if racism is the cause of this drop in support, it's certainly not just among republicans. "...it appears as though Obama's relatively small loss in support among Democrats has come exclusively from white Democrats." Yeah, because anyone w...

Re: Self-Esteem = Success? Destruction?

My high school started at 7:05AM. My first three years I went full time, staying up until 1-2AM and awaking four hours later to catch the bus. My final year, I only had class until noon. (Opposed to 3:30 the previous years.) At that point I was able to work the hours that I needed to and get my subs...

"US plans 'dramatic reductions' in nuclear weapons"

Here's the article. I'll be interested in seeing how "ending cold war thinking" goes, and I'm all for reducing our Nuclear stockpile. However, and maybe someone can help me see this, how is reducing the number of warheads in the United States supposed to help stop or slow proliferation? I...

Re: Ubisoft's Online Services Platform: Works best with ISDN

The best anti-piracy system is what iTunes and Steam does: make it cheap and easy, and people won't bother looking to find a free torrent. This. When people are considering pirating because it provides a better user experience , you're doing it wrong. I agree. It seems to me that if you run your pr...

Re: Metal nitrates in flame tests

You're spot on, chlorides and nitrate are used mainly due to being the most volatile at the given temperature and because their emission spectra don't interfere with most metals you'd be looking for.

Re: Man flies plane into building, Austin Texas.

I really don't feel that this was terroism. This seems to have been a calculated attack on the entity he believes had wronged him. Terrorism, by definition, is an action perpetrated to cause fear in a group or general populace. I don't believe that was the intent nor the actual outcome in this case...

Re: School Surreptitiously Spies on Students

OR: maybe they can identify the thief from the combination of a clear photo of their face and an IP address. Point taken, but I would be more inclined to enhance the reflection of the night sky off of the alarm clock, pick out a few major, identifiable stars, and triangulate from there. But that's ...

Re: School Surreptitiously Spies on Students

Even in the case of a stolen/lost laptop, how effective would a piece of software that remotely activates a webcam really be? Unless that assumption that's made is that only students from the school, recognizable by a photo, would steal the laptop, I would think that software, if available, that is ...

Re: A thought experiment with light

I would be inclined to say no. Without anything for the light to "reflect" (read change velocity toward your eye) you wouldn't see it. (Assuming the directed light is ideal with no scattering effects.) Seeing as you can't see the beam of a laser unless it's a higher output laser or you hav...

Long story short; Meteor hits moon, gravity fails, etc...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hey, all. Just wanted to give a little bio before I got to being involved and what-not. I'm a 21 year old Chemistry major at the University of Pittsburgh. I've been lurking about here for a few weeks or so, and decided I would start contributing rather than mooching. Besides the stereotypically scie...
