I'm trying to remember the name or author (actually, I'm more interested in the author) of a story about a man whose brain is kept alive in some sort of tank after he dies. The tank is in the home of the man's wife, and I think that the majority of the story is dialog between the wife and some visi...

Up until a few years ago, Omaha, Nebraska had WOW radio, which in addition to starting with the wrong letter(Omaha is west of the Mississippi River), also has only three letters instead of four. There's also a class of bikes usually known as "standards". They have a more upright riding position than a crotch rocket, but they don't have the "feet out in front of you" position that a lot of cruisers have. Very few manufacturers produce standards anymore, the Honda Nighthaw...

In high school I made book covers out of duct tape. I don't mean that I just covered the books with duct tape, but that I made actual, removable book covers from nothing but duct tape. I also made a duct tape baseball cap.

Salt and Samovar . They're hard for me to describe, so just go listen to We Will Break or Swallowed A Pill or Soon To Be The Dust. Also: Uncle Tupelo . Not remotely a current band (they broke up around 1993), but I don't think that many people have heard of them. If there was any band I could time-...

I've always thought VEHMT was cool, although I've also always suspected they were being a bit tongue-in-cheek. I personally don't plan on having children, but that has more to do with my dislike of extra responsibility than my feelings about the environment.

Speaking of guys using "girly"-smelling bath products, I use Bath and Body Works Coconut-Lime-Verbena glycerin soap. It doesn't really make me smell like anything after I get out of the shower, but it does smell good in the shower, and it doesn't dry out my skin like a lot of other soaps.

Re: Books you had to read for school that you could not stand

Did you not buy your books in high school? In public schools(at least in the US) books are generally provided by the school district. I once wrote a sonnet to a can of potato sticks that I think got extra points for being the only sonnet in the class that wasn't about weepy/treacly teenage wuvv. I ...

Re: Books you had to read for school that you could not stand

Has anyone ever been given a list of required reading for an entire high school course before the class starts up? Do they still refuse to do that? Seems like that would be a good way to seek out the books and enjoy them before having them torn apart in class. But then, I was always way too literat...

Shabanu. About an Indian girl who didn't want to be forced into an arranged marriage. It was probably about a 6th-grade reading level and we read in Sophomore English (10th grade). The only reason we had to read it was to fulfill a cultural diversity requirement. It wasn't really literature, it read...

It's snowing right now here. Looks like there's about 1/2" on the ground so far, 3-5" predicted. I am happy about this, since the clouds that come along with snow tend to keep the nighttime temperatures up a little bit, so it's not quite so bitterly cold when I go out to the car in the mor...

I love snow, but I hate ice and extreme cold. I'd rather live without snow than put up with the days(or weeks) on end of below 20 o temperatures that we get here in Nebraska. The wind is awful as well...0 o F is really not THAT cold on a calm day, but with a 10-15mph wind, 25 o F is unbearable. This...

Most places in America also do not allow nudity in public. This could partly explain why nudity gets a higher movie rating, because an R-rated movie is less "public" than a PG-13 movie due to the age restrictions on who can get in.
