Regarding True Grit: Neither one (the original w/ John Wayne nor the Coen Bros. version) was filmed anywhere within that blob. There should really be two True Grit blobs; one covering southwestern Colorado, the other covering northern New Mexico. I'm not sure if this graphic is supposed to represent...

Re: What-if #0094: Billion-Story Building

It seems like it would be simpler to change your target audience. Build a skyscraper for springtails. Each floor can probably be a millimeter or less. You don't need to worry about elevators, because springtails don't know how to press buttons. A billion millimeters is still rather tall, but... less...

Re: 1345: "Answers"

That's not a touche. It is more of an agreement. The fact that we don't know why we sleep doesn't diminish our hunger to know why we sleep. Millions are spent in sleep research. Hard questions take time to answer. That we still search for those answers is a testament to our hunger. Not a proof of i...

Re: What-If 0048: "Sunset on the British Empire"

What nigenet said. Eclipse is not sunset. If we're worried about events during which the sun is not directly visible even though it is above the horizon (i.e., -not sunset-), then presumably overcast days are more of a concern than eclipse. I'm sure the sun not being visible in the British Empire is...

Re: 1187: "Aspect Ratio"

What's worse is when different elements in the same clip are mismatched, aspect-wise. I remember an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which was definitely 4:3... if you watched it at 16:9 everything was badly stretched. However there was one exterior scene where the moon was clearly squished, tal...

Technically neither "tyrannosaurus" or "smilodon" is a Latin name. They're both derived from Greek. The proper term is Linnean or taxonomic name, not Latin name. Technically, neither Tyrannosaurus nor Smilodon are Linnaean names. These genera were published by H. F. Osborn and P...

Regarding this The reader is instructed to honk if (and only if) they love formal logic. After honking, they presumably still love formal logic, so they must honk again, and then again, ad nauseam. As someone else brought up, after sufficient honking they would stop loving formal logic, thus ending ...

I dispute this. Humanity is perhaps 50,000 years old but there is no evidence that we had genetically diverse populations over the entirety of that history. In fact, there is some evidence supporting a much later spread out from north africa/southern asia. Perhaps most likely that there have been m...

It seems kind of silly to say that race is just a proxy for the biological and genetic stuff. Isn't the biological and genetic stuff part of what defines the race? No, that's the point. There. Is. No. Genetic. Stuff. There is no scientific reason. It's self fulfilling. You create a split along arbi...
