Re: 1185: "Ineffective Sorts"

Some years back, perhaps in the 1980s, there was a competition for the "worst" sort algorithm. They were careful to state that 1) the sort had to actually work, 2) speed was measured only by operation count, and 3) "irrelevant" time wasting or sabotage instructions weren't allow...

Re: OFFICIAL! MEETUP: San Francisco, CA - June 26, 2010

So after all the time I spent punching numbers into my iThing, I would be terribly remiss not to actually publish them. And so here we are: a graph (and the raw data) of everyone's * arrival times to the XKCD meetup ! * Up until 14:25, by which time too many people were streaming in for me to keep u...

Re: Calgary Stampede

I'm down for that, in general (although my schedule is already a bit crowded around then -- but during the latter half of Stampede I can probably make time).

Are you (Woopate) one of the fine folks I met here in San Francisco at the meetup? (If so, hi! And hope you found some good eats!)

Re: OFFICIAL! MEETUP: San Francisco, CA - June 26, 2010

Oof, just got back to my hotel room now (after a long walk back via the Beach and the Presidio). But thanks everyone, it was a total blast! Special thanks to John for humouring me and breaking out the Dominion. Pictures when I get back to Calgary (assuming they aren't rendered utterly redundant by t...

I have my plane tickets, and my hotel room booked. I will be there. Very much looking forward to it!

...and here I just realized it's been a couple months since I checked in on this thread and expected (silly me) that I'd tune in only to discover that I'd missed it. Hah. So anywyay, I chime in now only to bump this up and report that I'm still interested. Mid-July-ish in the Washington-ish area? Ya...

Re: The Northwest Meetup

Ok, I'm the token Calgarian who went to the original meetup in Cambridge, and it's been over a month so I'm itching to do another one. If it's anywhere in the Edmonton-Regina-Calgary-Vancouver-Seattle-Portland corridor, I'm up for it!

Calgary, Alberta.

I demand an explanation for this . Or at least identification of the forumite. I can help with the latter, because... well... he's me . As for the explanation, I dunno, other than that I'm tickled pink. I'm currently sitting in the Denver airport departure lounge, on my way back to Calgary. I certa...

Calgary, AB, Canada anybody? Yeah, me. But... I'm flying, sorry. It's probably worth looking into... kayak.com sez you can still find an Air Canada / Northwest flight for $US458 return (including taxes, etc. which, with the high $Cdn these days, is still probably under $C500). Which is not much wor...

but I have no idea what you are on about here. I can see why those are solutions, but I have no idea how you deduced that they were the only two using that. What chessguy posted was actually a Haskell program. The first two lines from "let g = ..." until "...<0.001]" are the cod...

I saw this making out with yourself discussed in the last comic topic... Do we have control over the comics!?!? Well, it strikes me that there's one way to find out. Howabout this: we (here, in this thread) collectively settle on some striking proposal for a plot twist. Something that can plausibly...

After reading through this thread, I'm surprised no-one has brought up Girard's linear logic . Preservation of hypotheses precludes the distribution of one (in the given example, 'a') over two subterms. Specifically, we require that (in the tensorial case): ------ init ------ init a |- a b |- b ----...
