Re: Drowning in school

The posters above have much better advice than I have to offer, but something that's helped me through my first quarter in college is making a weekly to-do list. If you have the ability to know what assignments you have and things you have to do for an entire week (I know that some high school stude...

Re: My Future

I think you already realize this, but you're not going to have to make this choice for a loooong time. Just keep taking courses and exploring your academic interests. You could always go for computer science as an undergrad and go to med school. Then you'd have a lot of options.

Re: The Year 3000.

I think 3000 is wayyyyy too far into the future to predict. Hopefully humanity will have extended life to its limits in terms of longevity. Biotechnology seems to be one of the hot up-and-coming fields. Perhaps death will be preventable. Space travel will probably have come a long way, maybe toward ...

Re: Reactions to your Major

Future computer science major.

Most people haven't been that interested in it. They usually just say that it's a good field career-wise and ask what I'm going to do with the degree.

Re: Mac vs PC

Between Windows and OSX, I'd choose OSX. Never had a problem with networking, registry errors, cleaning up things I've installed, or anything like that on a Mac. Also, I love the window management features -- expose, full use of the multi-touch trackpad, spaces, etc. I've never had problems with app...

Re: Where would you like to wake up Tomorrow

Let's see... In the arms of the girl or boyfriend I wish I had, in... well, an apartment in either Kyoto or Otaru, Japan. The sun is shining outside, and my partner is still asleep. This. Or at the university I'll be attending in less than a month, ready to take classes with my schedule all figured...

TIL: binary search and selection sort. Yay intro CS class! :D

Unfortunately, I also learned (and have been learning) that self-study is quite inefficient unless you're motivated and have few distractions.

Re: Teaching language and argument: Logic over Literature

I agree with you that English lit. is not the place for teaching rhetoric and argumentation, but social studies classes, from my experience, don't work much better. A lot of the logic taught there is tied to particular interpretations of narratives just as in the English classes, except the characte...

Re: Who ate who?

Not a linguist (yet), so my opinion is not worth much in terms of grammatical truth. Intuition does tell me that the dog ate the cat, though. Dogs ARE generally bigger and arguably meaner than cats, so it's more probable that the dog did eat the cat and not vice-versa. :P I can't recall if this is r...

Re: Computer Science Colleges

I don't know about the other schools, but Stanford financial aid rocks. I also applied to UT Austin and would have had to pay about the same as Stanford, and that's with in-state prices. Don't let the sticker price scare you. The big colleges come with big endowments that help out poor undergrads. T...

Re: Things to Buy for College

Since you're in CS - I highly suggest a printer, memory card reader, and a scanner too if you can get cheap but good one. And one of those USB hubs. What laptop are you using? If it's a mac I can give you a list of apps that made my life a million times easier in college. Could you post those apps ...

Re: Things for College

Depth, not necessarily breadth, is key. Find one thing you love and take it to the national (or international) level. Get involved. In debate, for example, try to get to the NFL National Tournament or compete in your state tournament and do well there. Be honest in your admissions essays about what ...

Re: Writing Instrument

Lately I've been using the Pentel .5 mm mechanical pencils. I like that you can twist out the eraser and refill it, but the lead gets stuck a lot. I sometimes prefer to write in pen (preferably Pilot .5 or .7), especially when not writing technical stuff.

The ability to conjure up coffee at will. Sugar, cream, and cup would be optional. I'd be able to energize myself and fire streams of hot goodness at my enemies.

Re: "One Two" Discussion

I liked the comic and agree with Damien. The joke might have been in bad taste (although I'm guilty of laughing at it :P), but I doubt it was meant to offend. I see it as just playing on the seriousness of all the inter-major banter going on in lots of forums (and presumably campuses, but I have yet...

Re: How many of you view exercise as a chore?

When I was doing a fitness program (which I'm still considering continuing at some point...), exercise definitely felt like a chore, although the results were rewarding enough. Now, I run simply for the pleasure of it. Going outside and getting some sun gives me some time to just empty my mind.

Re: improving your work ethic?

I definitely second the to do lists. Almost every night before I go to bed, I go through what I want the next day to look like and list out each thing in terms of priority. I even make lists of my long term goals for a certain period of time (summer goals, year goals, etc.). Whenever I have a task l...
