Earth's landmass by latitude?

In yet another global warming "debate" (aka flame-fest) on Slashdot, I yet again saw the claim that agricultural output will actually increase due to warming. The poster's point was that, despite concerns over flooding and drought elsewhere, as the huge landmasses of Canada and Russia warm...

Re: I might let my house be forclosed upon

*I don't know enough about foreclosures, costs associated with credit, etc. to discuss them without talking out of my *ahem*, but I'll suggest how I would go about trying to evaluate everything. You don't have to make it as complicated as I suggest, but hopefully I get you thinking. If you know what...

Rationalized Insanity- my webcomic

I draw one-frame cartoons, and recently started posting them at http://rationalizedinsanity.com . I have an extra little quirk to my comics in that I separate some comics into a "rejects" section, for the ideas that for whatever reason I don't feel fit with the others. It's better than thr...

Re: Female Vocalists

I second the recommendation for Nightwish. While I'll admit I'm partial to Tarja's singing, their new vocalist is impressive too. Keep in mind you'll have to check newer stuff (such as Amaranth) in addition to older stuff (I recommend Ghost Love Score for an epic orchestrated piece) to get a sample ...

Re: Is low crime due to high incarceration?

Given there seems to be some confusion of terms above, I thought I should mention "incarceration rate" seems to refer to [population in prison]/[total population], while "arrest rate" seems to refer to [solved cases for a type of crime]/[total cases for a type of crime]. Nothing ...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Ahoy. I'm an engineer, and I like to draw comics myself. As a Slashdot addict, I appreciate finding a forum that has lots of +5 insightfuls without the hostile environment.

Re: Recommend one artist

I'll go with a Polish progressive metal band, Votum. They've got a lighter style, not unlike some of Riverside's work. Here's their song Indifferent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuoMoMgpGyA . Starts with beautiful piano, after a while it builds and shifts to a heavier tone, bringing in the guitar...

Makes me think of this ngram: http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/graph?content=%28%2C%29&year_start=1600&year_end=2000&corpus=0&smoothing=3 (it won't let me link). Credit to InformationIsBeautiful. (Not for the parentheses sensitive).

Re: "1996" Discussion

I took the Fundamentals of Engineering exam in the spring, and they allowed Casio, HP and TI calculators (no programmable ones allowed though). I've always despised CollegeBoard, so its nice to know I can fairly blame them for the TI monopoly (I used a TI on the test, but I already had it from junio...
