Re: How many prisoners?

Unfortunately, booka800's solution doesn't work.
Spoiler:
If there are three prisoners, and they are arranged 123 every night (person 1 is you), then you will only receive a light on night 5. Interesting strategy though, it might serve to narrow down the number of prisoners very quickly.

Re: Escape the Frictionless Circle

Start swinging the gold block around you, like someone warming up for a hammer throw. Keep swinging. More swinging. More angular velocity. How? As described, it simply doesn't work. The attempt at swinging results in your feet sliding ineffectually on the ground without giving you any spin at all. ...

Re: 5-uples around a table (hard puzzle)

How much work has been done on the upper bound for d? Obviously d<=42, because there are 252 seats around the table, and 6 of the 5-uples are mutual brothers. Also, a tuple has more brothers than just the one in a group of 6, so they would have to be placed at different distances, so d cannot be 42 ...

Re: How many prisoners?

There are probably quite a few problems with the algorithm being nondeterministic, and the warden could find some way to mess up your information (possibly make two prisoners think they have the same number and somehow not letting that information get through or something). However, the main issue i...

Re: How many prisoners?

I'm not sure I quite understand any of the previous solutions and attempts, but let me just try my own and see what you think. On night 1, the special prisoner is "positive" and the others are all "negative". Each night, anyone who is positive sends a signal (the others don&...

pi=3.14159..., because it (probably) contains all your other numbers as digit subsequences, in every base.
