I'll try using a different chord, but I dont think that's what the problem is since my two drives thare the same chord with two ends to it, and I've tried using both ends for the dvd drive with no change.

Not really a school prank, but a little while ago in my friends' web design class a friend attached a clapper to someone's computer so that victim's computer would turn off and on with a clap. I suppose this has the potential to be brought to a larger scale.

Something similar happened to me too. I had a magnet and it fell on to a wood burning stove and when I brushed it off the stove it wasn't very magnety anymore. It did have a very small charge though.
