Re: Java and Python

Knowing only one programming language or exclusively programming in one is a bad idea. You usually should know many so that you can choose the best language for each job. With that said, learn java first because it won't spoil you or get you used to some habits that won't work so well in java. It ju...

Re: What can I do with coding skills?

after spending a long enough time programming, you can pick up a language in about 1 hour. The rest of the time spent coding in the language makes you more alert to the nuances of the language, so be sure to learn as many programming languages as you can. Also, because project euler expects you to h...

Re: Is Common Lisp inherently slow or is it just my environm

are there any good common-lisp implementations that don't require me to install linux to run them? Also, does common-lisp have automatic garbage collection? I keep getting errors saying there is no more room for lisp objects. If not, what do I call to have the garbage collection remove an object?

Re: Is Common Lisp inherently slow or is it just my environm

IIRC, clisp isn't the fastest of CL compilers, but it's okay.

Which common lisp implementation should I use then? I am on a windows box.

Is Common Lisp inherently slow or is it just my environment?

I am using slime in emacs with gnu clisp and have been having a lot of slow running programs lately and wanted to know whether the language is inherently slow, it is my coding style or my environment that has been making my programs so slow. Any opinions?

Re: I want to learn how to code

I would suggest you start out learning programming basics on python. There are many good tutorials and books out there that teach programming to non-programmers that want to learn and python doesn't have a lot of technical grammar to get hung up on. You can get python at python.org.

Re: A compilation of best programming practices ?

I'm not sure this is exactly what you want but for java, effective java by joshua bloch is quite a good book for many good java coding practices. I guess some of this applies to object oriented languages in general.

What programming approach should I use to write an AI?

I know that different types of code use different approaches. For example, writing an app with graphics usually involves approaching the program from a standpoint of constant refreshing and thinking of the whole app in terms of an infinite loop where something gets drawn each time the loop is run. H...

Our school is divided into the following groups: 1.Those that couldn't care less- The majority of our school 2.The hard working people who aren't the smartest, but are capable, and often take AP classes 3.The average that work hard/very smart who don't really try 4.The ubersmart people that everyon...

Coding tasks to pick up a new language

I am currently trying to learn common lisp and can't come up with coding tasks other than to make a prime number generator and to do the problems on project euler. Any other suggestions? They can be for languages in general, not just for lisp.

EDIT: Wow, I totally read your question in the context of 'should I go there', not 'I go there, but is it good'. My bad. Short answer: YES. Long asnwer: It's generally accepted that, depending on how you twerk the ranking parameters, the top CS universities are UC Berkeley, Stanford, CMU, and MIT. ...

My physics teacher is pretty cool. Though he doesn't teach very much, when he does, he explains pretty well. He also plays starcraft 1 and is the only teacher that I know of that would sy "BFD" in front of the class.
