Re: What-If 0126: "Stairs"

Rombobjörn hit it spot-on above: this answers the wrong question. I'd be far more interested to know how long it'd take me (and what provisions I'd need, or how many encampments would be necessary) if I wanted to hike up a Tsiolkovsky-style compression structure built around a space elevator, I want...

Re: 1477: "Star Wars"

"A long time ago, plus four score and seven years ago, in a galaxy far, far away. It is a period of civil war. Rebel seaships, striking from a hidden cove, have won their first victory against the [insert Basically Decent adjective here] Federal Union." "...No, for the last time, not ...

Re: What-If 0123: "Fairy Demographics"

If fairies represent most of the biomass in the ecosystem, eventually, given enough time ... something will learn to eat them.

Having just read this:

I was growing increasingly concerned for Alice's well-being as the short story went on.

Re: What-If 0076: "Reading Every Book"

http://what-if.xkcd.com/imgs/a/76/books_leeasimov.png I may have stared at this longer than one should normally stare at this image, convinced that one of them, somewhere, is different... just a little... just, maybe, if I could see that slight flinch in a sea of blank stares. I may still be watchi...

Re: What-If 0053: "Drain the Oceans"

(MARS) As others noted- surprised this didn't delve into what happens on Mars! Perhaps it's just not as familiar a geography... but it'd be curious to see the existing geography become inundated & the impacts of erosion about the portal, as well as how the water would react to the temperature/pr...

Re: 1196: "Subways"

Might someone know the original source of this? The host on Flickr is similarly curious to track it down: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8515/8572344680_ab690e4369_o.png Now I'm wondering if it was Randall pre-releasing a map, albeit at a higher design quality rather than this one's more xkcd-like st...

Also curious- if I fall asleep in the sun on a bright day, I'll often wake up to find that I can't see the color red for the next 5-10 minutes.

I also like to append "Don't tell China." to the end of pretty much everything, even otherwise harmless, nonchalant, and innocent statements. It's replaced "in bed" when I read fortune cookies aloud.

Re: 0921: "Delivery Notification"

A conversation, verbatim, that I had w/ UPS while attempting to receive a package in November 2010... the problem here in DC is that UPS' facility is way in the suburbs & they have no downtown stores, whereas FedEx has plenty of walkable downtown stores & will change your delivery to those s...
