But that is the usual definition, n'est pas?

Re: math abbreviations

TFAE used to mean "The following are equivalent" is quite common in my experience. Lang uses "by abstract nonsense" to mean "proved using only category theory" and this usage seems to be catching on.

Re: Jerk

But what if I experience a jerk that is 10^N m/s^3 and lasts for 10^(-N) seconds, where N is some god awful unimaginable number? I wouldn't feel much using my normal senses other than that I'm accelerating at about .1g and my health would be fine. Enough acceleration over a short time may be painful...

Re: Insurance Rates

What is the rationale behind where the line is drawn on discrimination anyway? You can be a discriminating jerk all you what and openly refuse to, say, let someone into your house because of their age, race or the color of their socks. I don't think you could openly refuse to hire a nanny based on t...

Re: Jerk

You don't feel jerk though, right? Is there any physical sensation to an enormous jerk (or an enormous higher derivative) that lasts only briefly enough to cause a negligible change in acceleration? I don't think so (which is unfortunate, because otherwise you could say someone died from being a big...

Wait.. Mihăilescu's theorem? waaa? Ah. Didn't know that theorem. You can say that again. It is also known as Catalan's Conjecture and remained unsolved for like a hundred years until it was apparently proven a few years ago. Now I can say that I heard the news of a major problem being solved through...

You're absolutely right.. those in power will generally try to keep it, unless persuaded otherwise by legal action and so forth. You've just discovered the fundamental rule behind the American Way... Regarding batteries, there are mechanical methods for energy storage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flywheel_energy_storage Anyone know the land usage + economic costs associated to wind power? It seems to be a technology comparable to solar except that we have it now and aren't waiting for some mira...

Re: Inverting a cylindrical cake

Doh. I really did read that too, I just conveniently forgot it. Edit: partial solution. WLOG we may let x = p/q, where q is not 2 and where (p & q) are relatively prime. Let's think of the cake as already cut into q slices so that the machine does not have to make new cuts. Each press of the but...

Re: Inverting a cylindrical cake

It's only unit fractions. The states the cake goes through when x = p/q is related to the states the cake goes through when x = 1/q. To get the nth state in the former you look at the (np)th state of the latter. When x = 1/q it takes q steps to get to the all icing down and 2*q steps to get back to ...

Nuclear power is definitely a "proper" propulsion technology. By far the best "proper" technology we've come up with. But is it the best technology in space? Using a nuclear reactor to turn propellers won't get you anywhere. You would have to bring some mass and use the power ge...

Superb analysis. The remark about bloodless violence could be an xkcd comic unto itself. It happens everywhere: soldiers using guns that shoot "lasers" in superhero cartoons, Xena style tv fights that go parry-parry-kick, the over abundance of battle droids in Star Wars prequels. I'm sure ...
