Re: What-if 0027: Death Rates

One thing that wasn't taken into account is the fact that people dying in certain circumstances will kill others shortly after their own death, for example a person driving a car at speed may crash into a solid object, killing those travelling in the car with them, or may crash into another vehicle...

Re: 1149: Broomstick

Is it just me, or does the Wizard's hat make him look like BHG with a halo? I get that it's supposed to be a top hat with a hatband or stripe or something, but if the Wiz is BHG, that explains him being a bit of a jerk. Apologizing when caught seems out of character, though... On a separate topic, s...

Re: What-If 0025: Three Wise Men

My god. Don't be selfish. You have to share him with lots of other people too. Nono. That's where a lot of people are wrong, in that they have a fundamental misunderstanding of 'omnipresence' and 'omnescience'. If god truly is everywhere at all times, and he is also truly aware of all things at all...

so you CAN destroy a train with bullets. How many bullets would we need to destroy a tank, then? how about a building? How many swings from a crowbar? Depends. Gordon Freeman, by himself, even rocking the HEV, is unlikely to apply enough stress to the tank's armor with a crowbar to dent it, let alo...

Re: 1108: "Cautionary Ghost"

A pixel (truncated word from "picture element") is the smallest "dot" rendered by your computer. If you blow up a pixel, then split what used to be a pixel in half, then shrink it back down to original size, the pixel will either render or it will not. There is no half way. Unle...

As a non-native English speaker, I must say that these kinds of things are what make translations very difficult sometimes. In Swedish we have bokstavligen , which means "to the letter", and bildligen , which means "as pictured". These can be quite tricky to translate since the ...

Yeah, I'm not getting the lifting up from suction either. But I'll just have to trust Randall 'cause I haven't been able to cause a complete vacuum to spontaneously appear yet. I'll keep trying ;-) I buy that the glass will rise, what I don't buy is that the upper part of the glass will have enough...

Re: What-If 0004: A Mole of Moles

Would it be possible to breed enough moles to make rings around Earth, similar to those around Saturn, but out of moles? Could we put the moles up a few at a time and add them in as time goes by until we have a mole of moles encircling the Earth, or would they have to be shot up as one? Forming a r...

Something sounded fishy. 264 days / 7 days = 37 weeks. Pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. So you're saying the earth was born premature? Probably expains a lot. 40 weeks is counted from the start of the woman's last period, not from the moment of conception. Since ovulation typically occurs about halfway th...

Re: 1040: "Lakes and Oceans"

Sooo... what exactly is the difference between water rushing in and air rushing out? The air doesn't rush out. It gets compressed and pushed further in. Normally you'd expect air to rush out until the pressure is equalized, then for air to continue leaving while water enters. At that depth, no air ...

For me, at least, it's not about the possibility of some copycat reader doing this in real life. It's all about the (continued) presentation of a sociopath as someone clever, admirable, superior, and/or "classy." Yes, he's always been willing to cause harm, even grievous and potentially f...

For everyone wondering about how these stickervans deal with changes in the family or why they'd make the decision to show the pregnant mother, the answer is simply that they don't cost much and are fairly easy to remove/replace. I know that the cost issue is relative, but for an affluent and silly ...
