Re: Inspirations

Shakespeare's plays are great but as devices to teach modern teenagers how to use and enjoy English, they're terrible. Anecdata: as part of my studying English at university level in Sweden, we had an optional class whose exam was to perform a Shakespeare play. It did trip us up a little on words e...

The Hardy Boys Casefiles. Especially #1 (or #1-4 as a single game), and the Phoenix trilogy (#64-66). Also, maybe some of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys SuperMystery series. Or, you know, some of the classic original series. Hunting for Hidden Gold and The House on the Cliff were always my favorite....

I was hooked after the first two minutes. Got Netflix for this month just to show that yes I would like more of this please. Didn't it technically inspire feelings of sadness and grief? I suppose, but this feels somehow a perverse definition. Perverse, I tell you. Also you should always offer any people who are infrequent visitors/new to being in your house beverages (coffee/tea/water), at the very least, but they can't ...

Welcome, tarascon! Your post makes me once again want to read Finnegans Wake. (I mean, this wanting comes in waves -- I have never actually tried.) In theory I like Joyce -- the bits of Ulysses and his letters that I've read have all been great, though I didn't "get" Dubliners -- but sitti...

A poem by Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks, I believe. You have fallen in love with me. To the wind shall I scatter you. Listen to me. I warn you now, build up no hopes, Believe me, I shall destroy you. Listen to me. If, like the bee and the ant, you now Were to build two hundred houses, Oh, I shal...

I for one deny the "official" explanations of mod madness, and think that you simply poison our internets for about a week as part of a government program to see if drugs can be effectively transmitted via electricity and memetics. I'm all for it.

If Hemingway describes rain, I think it's raining. It's not the, how do you say, tightness of the prose that I have problems with. And it's okay! We don't have to be friends. We can have healthy disagreements about literature and such.
