Re: 0882: "Significant"

For this reason I don't think this comic can argue that more than 5% of papers are published with chance results. It was really this sentence that I was refuting. If everybody uses an alpha of .05 still and they don't do a multiple comparisons adjustment then you can make the argument that more tha...

Re: 0882: "Significant"

I don't think your logic is quite right. Just because we can get more accurate p-values doesn't mean that people suddenly use a lower alpha. If they get anything lower than .05 they'll publish. Sure you'll publish what the p-value actually is (p < .0001) but you would have been just as happy to pub...

Re: 0882: "Significant"

The sad fact is that far more than 5% of papers published against the rather modest standard of p < 0.05 turn out to be reporting on results due to random chance. This comic explains why. Most papers today actually report the best p value they can get, as given to them by their software. So yes, p ...

It's because a lot of academics view real-world use of their theories as an abomination. Depends on the field. In reality, it is probably because "all my best grad students go to work for some tech company" doesn't look as good as "all my best grad students get postdocs at elite rese...

There is a difference between "sources" and "empirical data." For example, if you had a child with behavioral problem would you rather think about it in a literary sense (as if your child were a character in a novel) or would you rather find out what the empirical data has to sa...

This soldier in question was instructed to take a computerized course on spirituality, i.e., meditation and the like, and meet with a chaplain. Unless the meeting boiled down to "Accept Christ or you can't serve", I don't see this as a bad thing, especially if the soldier learns a bit, de...

That doesn't change the fact that both arguments assume that English courses (and literary theory) don't care about sources, observations, etc. That's the connection I note, and the part that I find particularly annoying (not to say that the unique parts of each argument are without flaw). Well, you could just have a flat stop. There's no reason a homunculus needs a controller. But that doesn't answer anything, and it unnecessarily adds a homunculus. Also, you could cut stuff out of the cortex and theoretically end up with a philosophical zombie, but such thinking really just leads d...

To settle this once and for all (sort of): There cannot be a master controller because otherwise you'd run into a massive homunculus problem (A little man inside your brain).
