Re: 1011: "Baby Names"

I am not Russian, but we learned about this in Russian class. Russian "nicknames" (the word is not the best translation for this concept, but I don't know another one) are similar to diminutives (something that English lacks completely). It is what parents and grandparents call a child. T...

Re: 1011: "Baby Names"

And about nicknaming/shortening conventions, russians have some weird ones. While my friend Grigory was nicknamed Grisha (just one letter shorter), I also met two girls named Natalia nicknamed Natasha, wich has the same length as Natalia. If there is any russian around here that can explain these th...

Re: 1011: "Baby Names"

My mother is a teacher in a school where most os students are from the lower social classes, and in Brazil this means lots of weird names (we have close to none regulation/rules regarding naming your child). The best (or should I say worst?) one was from a student a few years ago: Luft Power (that's...

Re: 1005: "SOPA"

Why do these laws have such ridiculous names? In Swedish "sopa" means "a piece of garbage" and "pipa" means "to squeek" amongst other meanings. Well, in (brazilian) Portuguese, "sopa" means "soup" and "pipa" means "kite"...

Furthermore analogies are not meant to be perfect so nitpicking at them does not prove you correct. Attack something else in my original statement besides an imperfect analogy? I was not attacking anything, I was just correcting your explanation of what our beloved Zombie Cat Analogy really means :)

Re: 1003: "Adam and Eve"

It's an analogy and it kinda does: untill I have definitive proof of the creation of the universe it is both creationism and the big bang. I am not even beginning to address your understanding of cosmology, with its own flaws. I'm saying this is also an incorrect assessment of what Schrodinger's ca...

Re: 1003: "Adam and Eve"

Also, I'm Christian, and I don't hold that part of the Bible to be literal. In defense of those who do, I'd like to point out that it's not stated by whom Adam's kids had kids. God may have created other humans as well, or may have designed them so that incest was not a problem for the first $n$ ge...

Re: 1003: "Adam and Eve"

The Westermarck effect, as has been said, seems to be the biggest issue. (I don't think I'd have any serious issue with a relationship with any of my cousins, as we grew up totally separately; though I can't say I've thought about it too hard.) My case would be the complete opposite. I've grow up r...

Comic "making fun" of the Bible, troll trying to derail discussion completly, people still managed to have intelligent debates and argumentations. Fate in humanity restored.

That's why I love XKCD threads.

PS.: and as usual, learned something new, the Westermarck effect. :)

Re: 1000: "1000 Comics"

The uniformity of the placement of the characters, and the uniform line widths, is remarkable. Far too uniform for this to be a pure "imagine and start drawing" comic. I hypothesize that Randall developed some analysis methods and perhaps wrote some code to help him prepare "Radiatio...

There is a comic 404! It might be the best one of the lot :) I am SUCH a dork... Somehow, it never occurred to me that there was a gaping hole between #403 and #405 (I've only been reading for about a year and a half, though I've read every single one). I "found" #404 today... The result ...

1 USB stick: R2D2

Still thinking in names for the Xbox, wireless router and second USB stick
