I say chains, because tied to chains the prisoners seem to get regular meals. In cages, it appears they are forgotten about until they die. Also, when tied to chains, they can be cheered up by things (Like a lovely waterfall, for example. So make your prison by the waterfall is what I'm saying) You...

You won't get migrants until year two of your fort, after you've had a chance to export some things and make a name for yourself. That said, make a lot of trade goods and feed them into the first caravan.

Well, any soil layer exposed to sunlight will begin to produce plants on its own, so as long as you can encompass some block of soil with your tower you'll be good for tree output.
