Re: Driving 10,000 miles, starting next week

This is a genuinely epic undertaking. It's the sort of thing that you'll talk about for the rest of your life (assuming you don't become one with the car on the way there) and I'm really quite jealous. Going to be difficult making up an ipod playlist that lasts 10,000 miles though...

Re: Swimming to get back in shape

Evengeduld's right, swimming is a full-body thing. Going by the advice of a colleague who was on the UK Armed Forces team, go for sprints, working up through sets as though you were doing interval work. As a side effect you will get a lung capacity bigger than most whales. Also, rowing, even static ...

Re: Run 10,000 miles

I had posted some miles, but since it was a first post and hadn't been approved by mods in time it's now been overtaken by events. Therefore, 5 miles three times this week:

2100.85 + 15 = 2115.85

(I'm half-temped to go sprint 15% of a mile just to get this to a round number. Is that bad?)

Re: Newspaper "Aids and Abets" Murderer

Vince Cable of the Liberal Democrats described the exponentially increasing furore thus: "It is a little bit like the end of a dictatorship when everybody suddenly discovers they were against the dictator". It's true. There's a lot of people out there, including a great deal of the tabloid...

Re: Today I Learned

He has a hobby. He just prefers never taking any time off to do it and instead over-analyses everything that crosses his desk, presumably in the hope of one day getting a "World's No.1 Martyr" coffee mug...

Re: really random cry for help

That second picture is brilliant. I have never seen a cat look genuinely awestruck before. It's like it's watching an alien spaceship slowly blot out the sun.

Re: Today I Learned

TIL: My boss gets extraordinarily upset if someone misuses "due to" versus "owing to". What's the difference? I thought they were basically interchangeable, both meaning more or less "because of". It turns out that "owing to" is used for verbal reasons, and &...

Re: Today I Learned

TIL: My boss gets extraordinarily upset if someone misuses "due to" versus "owing to". I also learned that diving through the air like a presidential bodyguard to make a difficult shot in squash may look quite cool but nevertheless is a fundamentally bad idea.

Re: Run 10,000 miles

I should probably contribute something useful in a first post, so here's 5 miles per day from the last three days (I'm in tremendous pain).

2078.85 + 15 = 2093.85
