Re: xkcd's favourite 100 books - vote now!

I would vote "no plays", on the grounds that they're meant to be performed rather than read. Saying "my favourite book is Hamlet " is a bit like saying "my favourtie book is the shooting script of Cool Hand Luke " as far as I'm concerned. Not that I'd be adamantly for ...

Stop comparing Curiosity to fighter planes. Apparently it's not science. GENEVA (The Borowitz Report)—The landing of the Mars science rover Curiosity does not qualify as a significant scientific achievement and should not be getting so much of the public’s attention, says the team of scientists who ...

Re: What does a 21st Century Library Look Like?

Given that the definition of library is not going stay same for the next century, I think an ideal library would be able to adapt easily. A mixture of different spaces and rooms, which could be easily renovated to serve purposes so something completely different that we maybe can't even imagine them...

I know a lot of people on the Interwebz are ticked that the Doctor made no appearance whatsoever. I think it would have been perfect for him to have been in the whole boy-meets-girl thing, escorting one and then another through the different decades. I agree. I was very disappointing he didn't appe...

I think we decided that we're not counting plays, but if we did, Tom Stoppard's Arcadia would have made the cut. Well, there's a couple of plays by Shakespeare on the list already. My list of 20: (just 20...? not easy at all) Maus, by Art Spiegelman The Tempest, by William Shakespeare 20,000 League...

Re: What makes Royal families Royal?

Concerning this question of "What would happen to the Crown Estate if Great Britain were to become a republic, and would it be a theft?", I think a comparative study would be useful. After all, many countries that once were monarchies are now republics, and so there certainly are precedent...

Re: Breivik sane?

There was a first psychiatric evalution, saying that was criminally insane, then a second one reverting that. At least one point of contention is that the second one might be influenced by the public response to the first evaluation. The public responded very badly to the implication that someone c...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Why do you think 'national borders' supersede the will of the people actually living there? Because the will of a minority of people in a country wanting to redefine borders doesn't supersede the will of the majority to maintain territorial integrity. Otherwise anybody can secede at any time. It sh...

There would definitely be a reason to deny New York its own country. The rest of the US would almost certainly like access to the trade and economy and tax money there. There are reasons for Israel to deny Palestine its own country, like the protection of the settlers or control over the holy sites...

Even if they buy their own textbooks, I assume they don't select them right? They get a note from their school listing which textbooks they should buy? Never finished The Stand. I started it when I was literally like twelve or thirteen and tried to pick it up again over and over through my teenage years and could never manage to get back to it. It doesn't have to be absolute loyalty to the state per se, just absolute loyalty to a particular organization above all else. Said organization often wants to become the state, but until then... Benito's Fascist Party demanded loyalty to the Fascists, not to Italy, until the Fascists took control ...

I thought the XKCD fora may find this blog post interesting. Everyone already knew that the elections were rigged, but some Russian bloggers took the official statistics and produced a couple of nice graphs to prove that there was systematic vote fraud. (If more proof is needed, that is. Interesting...

Re: Putin's United Russia Barely Wins Duma Majority

I'm struggling to come up with a conspiracy theory as to why they would want to rig an election to get this few votes. Unless it's some kind of scheme to get the opposition to riot so they can be legitimately arrested? Maybe they severely overestimated their popular support and thought they'd stuff...

In Finnish it's kani , pronounced "kani" (the k as the k in kite). Also; IPA: [ˈkɑni]. Vowel 'a' as the a in car , not rat . (Many foreigners tend to make that mistake.) The word itself is related to (or possibly even comes from, I don’t know that much about linguistics) the Swedish kanin .

Additionally, major conflict between the USA and PRC is unlikely, they're too closely tied together economically for a war to be feasible for either side. However, not all political leaders care if a war is a feasible thing or not. Both World Wars were very insensible things to do in purely economi...
