Re: Anime!

Haruhi is on my list- I just haven't gotten to it yet. But yeah, Card Captor Sakura is one of my weaknesses. I usually don't like cutesy girly stuff, but when a magical girl has real problems, I love it. Like comparing Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne to Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon: Waaah!!! I'm upset because my...

Re: Books everyone seems to like that you think are bad

i completely agree with the idea that jules verne was one of the first actual FICTION* writers.. it makes his books so much better. *I'd mention another.. erm.. book of antiquity, the most-sold book of all time, but if I called it "blatant fiction", I might get my head chopped off. Which ...

Re: Ratings appropriate for young children

I think it depends on the child and the parent. The moment my parents got me and my sister home from the hospital, they began reading us every book they could, and as soon as we learned to read (age 2), we did the same thing. At 8, my favorite authors were Mark Twain and Roald Dahl, though I also re...

Re: Atlas Shrugged

She apparently had a big rape fantasy/submission thing going on. She also didn't believe that anyone should feel jealous of a sexual partner, so she got really upset when her husband got into a snit just because she was openly having an affair with a much younger man.

Re: Books everyone seems to like that you think are bad

I'm no fan of Dickens either... or any other book where the author was paid by the word. They have good plots somewhere, buried under the detailed descriptions of every brick in every wall in every house in London. Agreed in general, but Jules Verne has some good stuff. Jules Verne didn't suffer to...

Re: Books everyone seems to hate that you think are good

I read 'Catcher in the Rye' on my own, but I spent the entire book wishing someone would pop by and break Holden's nose. I didn't dislike him just because he was whiny, I disliked him because he didn't do anything to better his situation. If life sucks that much, you'd think he would put forth some ...

Rare- I like it to be red on the inside, though I'll eat pink if I have to. If it's not cold in the middle, it's done, and that's that. Although my friends say that it's gross...

Re: Atlas Shrugged

I was going to say something about rape but I think that was actually the Fountainhead. It's at least somewhat implied that the men that screw Dagny don't really care whether she wants it or not. That said, this film will more than likely be focused on Dagny sleeping with people, with maybe a littl...

Re: Strong Female Protagonists

There's also The Looking Glass Wars and the sequel, Seeing Redd by Frank Beddor. They are about the real story of Princess Alyss Heart of Wonderland. They are excellent books. I'm going to have to disagree on this one. Alyss struck me as yet another fantasy bimbo- she doesn't get a true hero's jour...

Re: Anime!

I've been an anime nut since 1999 (not that old, but I remember when subs cost more than dubs, and you were lucky to find anything more than cut Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, and $30 two-episode tapes of Ranma 1/2). Lately, I've had less time for it, but I still have a pretty good collection. Some favo...

Re: Book you are proudest to have finished...

I was proud of finishing 'Atlas Shrugged', because even though it was an uphill struggle against the chunky dialogue and out of control monologuing, I got it done in three days (I tried for the scholarship, because $10,000 is nothing to sneeze at. Sadly, I didn't get it, so I'll just try again next ...

Re: Never Seen Star Wars

The problem with the prequels is that someone decided, somewhere along the line, that Star Wars was SERIOUS BUSINESS. Not the older actors, who appear to be having fun. It's the younger actors who are emoting like they're in a silent re-make of 'King Lear'. The OT has a lot of bad dialogue too, and ...

Re: Ayn Rand

I've read several of her books- I think that 'Anthem' is the best. Her books are dull because she never learned to write convincing conversations- 'Anthem' eliminates that problem by having barely any conversation in it. Her ideas get kooky because she assumes that every single person in the world i...

Re: Books everyone seems to hate that you think are good

I really like Shakespeare- I like reading the plays better than watching them. Why? Because the actors always forget that this was popular entertainment of the day. They barely even notice the jokes, or they say them in such an overly jocular manner that even people who get the joke don't laugh.

Re: Thinking about going vegetarian...advice? thoughts?

I'd suggest talking to a nutritionist if you've had iron problems in the past. Here's a blanket statement that can't really be argued with- vegetarianism CAN be unhealthy... along with every other diet in existence. The health of vegetarianism vs. other diets is usually from the fact that vegetarian...

Re: Books everyone seems to like that you think are bad

I don't know, that post kinda makes me want to track this down. It seems interesting. Maybe that much didn't do it justice, but it's nothing but a series of explosions, villians who are alternately way too sighted or way too stupid, and creepy pedophilic undertones (plus the run-ons!). Half the jok...

Re: Books everyone seems to like that you think are bad

The Looking-Glass Wars by Frank Beddor. What I want to know is how this ridiculous project ever got green-lit. "Okay, we're going to take the producer of There's Something About Mary , give him free license with Alice in Wonderland despite the fact that he always hated it, and let him turn it ...
