Cellular automata/Game of life: topics related to AI

Hello everyone, for a school project I decided to create a simple cellular automata that takes rules and patterns as an input and shows the evolution of the universe according to them. My teacher proposed me to present this work within an Artificial Intelligence workshop. The problem is how do I rel...

Re: Does having kids really make you less happy?

I think it really really depends on the situation... the money a family has, their cultural level, the health of their kids, the parents' ability to be good parents and have happy kids that make them happy and not troubled kids that make them troubled and so on... I don't think you can average a res...

Re: Does having kids really make you less happy?

Woo, I'm kind of scared while I read of how someone thinks of himself and his happiness... I don't think happiness should be looked at as something rational, because it being irrational is what makes you happy. A thought alone cannot make anyone happy, I think. I'm too young to have children, but fr...

Re: Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to resign

They said the problem was Berlusconi, and it wasn't (nothing has changed so far with super mario). The man's had what, a week in power? Give him a chance! you are right, but I was more talking about the effect on the markets: everyone was expecting the markets would give more "trust" to t...

Re: Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to resign

To be fair though, when you're paying for the party, it's pretty okay to attach some strings to the money. And really, the rest of EU is paying at the moment, it gets called loans only because that's the diplomatic way to describe "here's a bunch of money, please don't default and drag the ent...

Re: Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to resign

Hello everyone, sorry if this is somehow an old thread, but I felt the need to say my opinion on the issue. I am Italian, but was in London for a year until this past summer. I have to say that yes, Silvio Berlusconi has been a unique and entirely criticizable character in italian politics, but I am...

Re: Definition of Free Will

A rock bouncing down a hill, on the lowest known level, also depends on quantum processes: how does your reasoning not apply to it too? (btw, I absolutely do not agree that something that does not have awareness can make a "choice") And I agree with you. For a rock bouncing down a hill, i...

Re: Definition of Free Will

maybe i do not understand how my idea is equivalent to elasto's, it's probable, but to me, what we get wrong, is perspective. We see these quantum entities as independent items that kind of "make choices" for us. I think we all agree that these "particles" do make choices, even i...

Re: Definition of Free Will

[...] Suppose you decide to choose which to eat by flipping a coin (and for the sake of argument, let's presume that flipping a coin could be a truly random event rather than a deterministic though unpredictable one). So, you choose which of ice cream or apple pie to eat by flipping your coin. And ...

Re: Definition of Free Will

Hello everyone! I've started to be interested in the subject about a year ago, when a friend of mine asked me how computer work. I became talking about levels of abstractions and meanings, then we reached the topic "differences between humans and machines" and from there I think I started ...
