Re: [Trigger warning: classic literature]

We have a literary canon - it is updated, but infrequently. That makes sense, absent the assumption that the modern day is inherently more enlightened, and the modern way of thinking is unequivocally superior. If a work has been considered important for millennia and *you* think it's not, odds are ...

Controversial material is dropped from the curriculum. University faculties become even more ideologically lopsided than they already are. I posted an example scenario earlier in the thread. It's a short hop, once you accept that students should be forewarned to avoid course material, that those wh...

Once again, people are *already* conflating trauma triggers with "I don't want to read about patriarchy" In the very communities driving this change. Why should I believe that these activists, many of whom literally want me dead, are acting in good faith here? Because it doesn't matter. T...

You know you don't actually have to do the work yourself. Your landlord likely won't do the work himself either. You can pay someone else to do it, just like a landlord would. That's incredibly pedantic. The Marshall plan per set didn't begin until 48, but it was the spiritual descendant of lend lease, which had been running since 41. I would point out that it's ridiculous to call the Marshal Plan a "spiritual descendant" of lend-lease, but the whole concept of...

Re: Smart gun debuts, stupid people revolt

It seems pretty black and white to me. If the behavior you claim as being a necessity to personal safety actually increases your risk of violent death, then it's not a necessity to personal safety. If you keep a gun handy and don't wear your seatbelt because you like guns and don't like seat belts,...

To weigh in, the objection I have (and I can't speak for others) is that you specified lethal force. Actually, in the hunter-gatherer societies, women tended to be in charge of the tribe. As evidenced by fertility and earth goddess worship at least. @Tyndmyr, technological development is not a simple explanation of the phenomenon. Looking at this, it seems the gun must function by having some radio-frequency modulated lock on the bolt assembly. That seems like it'd take about two minutes to remove with a hacksaw. You could make it harder by making the gun impossible to strip - but then the gun will be shite and get stoppages....
