Maybe we've got it all wrong from the beginning of Time. What if the castle is made of sea (or an artificial concoction made to simulate sea) and the rising tide is sand? It would only need a small adjustment to the nature of fluid and solid for this to be feasible.

My guess: projector and screen. Folks seem to be assuming that the world is either 2-D or 3-D. This may not be the case here - I think Megan's dike is in a 2-D portion, with the arches being in a 3-D portion.
