Re: Police misbehavior thread

I am just amused by the whole concept that a policeman can screw up and cost the department hundreds of thousands of dollars in a legal settlement, and then keep his job. I work for an insanely rich company. If I broke a door or something I suspect they would bill me for it.

Where the heck did "No man left behind," come from? I am a retired army officer, I never heard of such a thing. We may have left people behind in Vietnam, and most certainly did in Korea. It sounds like something from a video game or movie. I would like to know the first appearance of the ...

Taliban Releases US POW

The only American soldier known to have been captured in Afghanistan has been released in exchange for five Taliban guys from Cuba. I see it as a win-win. We got our guy and we got rid of five Guantanamo people no other country would accept.

Obviously, applying resources to the low-end of the scale will have more impact than trying to nudge the high-end to even greater levels. If I had two cars, say an old Dodge Dart and a new BMW and only a $1,000 to spend on them, obviously the Dodge would give me more bang for the buck. With the mone...

5.1 Earthquake in Orange County (California)

I do not clearly understand earthquake. There is that logmatritic scale to deal with. Then there is the time of day and the depth to consider. Most alarming is the factt hat a 5.1 today might (or might not) a prelude to a bigger one next week. It does seem California has had a whole lot of shaking g...

It most likely is not a training target. Combat pilots train on elaborate simulators nowadays. An electronic aircraft carrier is cheaper to build than a steel one.

North Korean tanker Missing in the Med

A North Korean oil tanker fueled up from a rebel-held facility in Libya, and then disappeared. The transponder has been turned off. The ship ran past the Libyan government blockade and may be heading back home with $24M in discounted oil. Or of course, perhaps it is trying to link up with the Malays...

On the face of it, I doubt it. Remember Linear C (B?)? It was an alphabet found engraved on Crete. A researcher in England was convinced it was just an ancient way to write in Greek. She took the proper names of ancient towns on the island and found she could match them letter-for-letter. She then d...

That is not what happened. Recently a nominee for the US District Court in Washington DC was delayed for 17 months. When his name came up for a vote, all senators present voted for the fellow. There was no objection to the man. There was an objection to President Obama making an appointment.
