As I understand it, speeding tickets are seen as a tax on people who do not live in town. Rental car and hotel room taxes work much the same way.

Re: Police misbehavior thread

I am sorry some people have had trouble with my link. It works for me. So I went to Google to find an alternative cite. I did not really find one. But the Post-Dispatch is reliable, I am sure it is correct in its reporting. What I did find was a most alarming or perhaps amusing report on all the 90 ...

Flordells Hill, Missouri is in Saint Louis County. This is the county that had this terrible situation in Ferguson. Anyway, Flordell Hills started it's own police department on 1 October. They found a skull that "may be" that of a waiter who is still missing. Or it might just be a random skull someone brought on the cruise for laughs.

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

I see that in 2013, fewer rockets were fired into Israel than in any year since 2001. Isn't that remarkable? The trend in rocket firings was down for more than a decade. I wonder how much of this was due to good Israeli intelligence work, how much to adult leadership from Hamas and how much to somet...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Its impossible to make peace with Hamas. They are bent on the destruction of Israel. It is impossible to make peace with a group that is bent on your destruction. This really should be obvious. Well, if you cannot make peace with the Arabs, I suppose you propose to fight them. That has been going o...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

The Israelis must do what is required for peace. That might be knocking down buildings and shelling cities, but it might be something else. Since we have decades of experience showing that force alone will not work, they need to try something else. You seem to be complaining that the Israelis alread...

Well since this doesn't work, they ought to try something else. (I did give my harebrained ideas on how to make peace a few dozen posts upstream. That should give anyone lots to find fault with.) Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Yeah, as I pointed out Hamas is not strong enough to have a monopoly on legitimate violence. That is to say they can't crack heads to make the rockets stop. (this presumes they want to of course.) Meanwhile, and this is rather shocking, the Israelis seem to be running out of ideas. The security serv...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

The butcher's bill now stands at about fifty Israelis and a thousand Palestinians killed. This gives us an exchange ratio of about 1:20, typical of colonial warfare. In the American experience in Afghanistan (admittedly, the best-case scenario) we can expect 30 wounded for each person killed. If Isr...

Then there's no point in invading, and all of those people are dying for naught. Unless Israel is basically prepared to engage in genocide in Gaza, they cannot defeat Hamas using military force. Correction the person reported killed was not an Israeli citizen. Now reports indicate he was a Thai guest worker and he may have been killed by a mortar.

Mortar scare me more than rockets. In a conventional war at least, a mortar can deliver a shocking amount of firepower.

When I got here, Westerners still had Scud fragments that landed on their rooftop or in their gardens. That stuff made for a heck of a souvenir. A few points: 1. The reason they go on to the roof is that they know that in most cases if possible the IDF will not attack a house full of civilians. Iron Dome is technically interesting but not a serious weapon. It counters the enemy's $1,000 missile with your $100,000 missile. This is a foolish game on the face of it. Equally odd are the Palestinian rockets. No Israeli was killed by a rocket attack in 2013. I think I am right in saying that one...
