Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts (now with 20% more fungus!)

I'd like to officially welcome the xkcd fora to PostgreSQL (if it wasn't on there already). I saw that in one of the errors a half-hour or so ago.

I'm still a SQLite person, but I suppose a forum of this size would have... issues on a flatfile database.

I'm sorry to hear that you had issues with your balls.

Unrelated RT, though: Why is the forum backwards for me today? The avatar/details box is on the left, then the quote button, THEN the post title.

It's fucked up. If anyone has a viable explanation, I'd be glad to hear it.

Re: ITT: We make xkcd slightly worse.

Ok, someone further upthread mentioned the possibility of a ratings system for the xkcd/sw archive site. I suppose there are two possible criteria to choose from: How much worse the comic was made by this attempt, or how much cheese was burned when you saw it. Personally, I'd roll with the latter, b...

Ok, by the time I put up another page's worth of comics on the xkcd/sw archive, another 3 pages have been added to this thread. Either I'm being a lazy fuck, or y'all are hugely talented. I think it's the former, myself.

Anyway. Page 3 is up, taking the count to 104; link is in my sig, as ever.

What is the critical speed; i.e. if you go faster, you actually slow down to an external observer due to relativity, but if you go slower, to an external observer you take longer to get to your destination? If I recall the pop-science books I read, there's a speed somewhere around 0.1c where relati...

Well, I was watching an old Top Gear a few weeks ago, and they mentioned the Siemens HV Lab somewhere in Germany, that might be fun. If you've already been to CERN, the only places left are really university labs like Manchester and Imperial-London, which may not excite the physiksenses.

Mm, sounds like you're pushing yourself at work, getting yourself tired. Same happens to me: even though I do no work at work, I drive 2 hours each way, and I'm still getting used to this car. All of which adds up to me getting tired.

Getting up at 5am doesn't help.

Alternatively, I could set up an admin side to the site, where you could upload a slightlyworse with name, author and date of submission, and it'd record it in the database. There'd be users, of course, and you'd have to ask me for an account, etc. If that sounds like more work than setting up xkcdw...
