Randall, in case none of you had noticed, Linux is used on like 80% of the world's top 500 super computers, so having support for large numbers of CPUs and high performance stuff might be important so that we can solve problems like if its going to rain in your fucking windows parade. :evil:

This reminds me of signing the 10,000 pages for my mortgage (ugh!). At one point I joked that there would be a blank sheet of paper and they'd say "here, sign this blank sheet of paper. Sure enough, there was one. Not completely blank, but practically nothing on it, it was like a left over page...

What's annoying to me is that people haven't learned from the year 2000 problem not to use two digit dates. I still see people use two digit dates on important documents. When I call them out on it, they act like its nothing.

Oooo! Oooo! I was totally thinking about this kinda thing recently. I was going to try to make a diagram showing the layers or protocols that are used to make up something like a desktop. Including little details like how character encoding works and all that. 8)

Its not a book, but there is this old documentary (1976) by Howard Smith called Gizmo. The intro to the film has some words of insight into the world of inventors and there are about 10 words in it that are made up. It always confused me until I realized that they were made up. Its a really good doc...
