Re: FIFA officials arrested

Blatter gets re-elected - shock horror as people on gravy train vote to keep it going. And allegedly Spain voted for Blatter, so so much for the united front from UEFA. Everyone gets outraged, and obviously Blatter is terrible etc, but frankly I can't be bothered to make the effort. The only way thi...

Mad Max: Fury Road

A few days ago I didn't have any major interest in seeing this film - but now the reviews have been pouring in and almost every one is a rave, so I'm intrigued and will probably give it a go. Plus as a bonus it's already wound up loads of misogynists. Anyone else planning to see it?

The only reason why I knew what 'prima nocte' was because it pops up in Braveheart as one of the many Very Evil Things that the cartoon villain English do in the movie. And Terry Pratchett referencing droit du seigneur (basically the same term) in Wyrd Sisters.

I thought it was decent, good work from the three leads (Isaac is on his way to being a big star, and deservedly so). Nothing amazing but I like the sense of creeping dread throughout.

And misogynistic and racist? Seriously?

Spoiler:
Urgency? I don't know about that, I just thought the scene looked really cool. All the MCU climactic battles tend to lose something when they follow the same rough format anyway (gosh, another battle in the air huh?), hope they at least try to change things up soon.

Re: Avengers!

It's not as good as the first film, and the film creaks when having to set up future instalments, but I still really enjoyed it. Plenty of Whedon wisecracks are always fine with me. What it gets right are the characters, with the same excellent character moments and dialogue we got in The Avengers. ...

Yeah... this is one of those things that never really made sense between the prequels and the originals, along with Leia remembering her mother, who in the prequels died in child birth. I'm a lot more willing to overlook that than the fact that Padme died in childbirth . What kind of shit is that? ...

Re: Inherent Vice

For the most part I really enjoyed it (the cast are fantastic too) and found it very funny, though there were one or two sections where the film almost grinds to a halt in its stoner fug. I love Paul Thomas Anderson in general though and I can see why the ramshackle pace would drive some people mad.

I thought it was pretty funny, and I loved the soundtrack (and I'm no jazz fan). It isn't as clever as it thinks it is and it doesn't deserve to win Best Picture/Best Director over Boyhood this weekend (which it probably will do), but I'll take a film that's funny and up its own arse a bit over a fi...

I'm sorry some football fans are morons (for the record, most of us are not, and most of us don't talk about sport to people who aren't interested). It doesn't really excuse your sanctimonious arrogance though.

I thought the US avoided this sort of nonsense by forcing people to be vacinated to get into school. The UK is far far worse, we have 1000s of cases as the vax rate dropped off a cliff because of that one idiot. To be precise, one idiot plus the media all lining up to spout BS without looking at th...

BTW, one nice thing about watching football (aka handegg etc etc) even if you don't care about the sport or the teams is that so little actually happens that there's plenty of time for unrelated conversation between everyone present. (And if you don't think almost nothing happens, google for one of...

Toy Story 2 (I prefer The Terminator and Alien over their sequels)

Battle of the Five Armies was like the previous two, by no means a bad film but a frustratingly mixed bag. Martin Freeman has been by far the best thing about these films.

In short, good but not great. Oddly my main worry (that the film would be too long) didn't really come to pass, it didn't feel like the best part of three hours anyway. And I know there's been plenty of analysis of plot holes and the science involved etc, but I didn't really ...
