I love locks. Disc detainers are neat, but the coolest ones are magnetized dimple locks, where the keys look like this.

Re: Bicycle Locks, and Securing Them to a Frame

My thought is that picking locks to get into or steal things is not a common practice, and that even if it were, disc-detainer locks such as the ones on kryptonite U-locks are more difficult than most thieves are going to bother learning, because they require specialized tools that are *only* good f...

Re: Bicycle Locks, and Securing Them to a Frame

A bic pen is not all that it takes to open a disc-detainer lock. They're substantially harder for the average sport-picker to get open than your standard pin and tumbler locks. Your padlock is in theory much, much easier to get into that way, if anyone ever bothered picking into locks to steal bikes...

Re: Bicycle Locks, and Securing Them to a Frame

I really like the U-lock because it's locking mechanism is really easy to pick if I forget my key. Picking isn't something to worry about in terms of theft, but it sure makes it convenient if I fuck up and lose my shit.

Living in Boston, it is a literal necessity. If you leave your bike unlocked even in a backyard as non-urban and safe as mine is, it'll be gone within a half hour. It's $40 I don't really want to spend, but it's better than replacing my $400 bike.

I use a kryptonite silver U-lock, and it came with a setup identical to this .
