Yeah, for me it's stone (at the quarry) or diamond (everything else). Iron is needed for rails, carts, and maybe armor once I decide to up the difficulty.

I second the digging-straight-down idea. Seven logs worth of ladders gets you sixteen meters down, so it only takes 5-6 trees to get to diamond territory. (But definitely store everything you have except for a pick and the ladders. Lava hurts.) Not a bad idea if you're placing ladders every 1 or tw...

Yeah, just go spelunking and you'll find tons of iron. Last cave system I explored netted me over 5 stacks. I use this method to keep from getting lost.

Training them to follow you and attack certain targets is pretty cool, though. I wonder if they'll attack something you shoot with an arrow; getting close enough to punch the enemy kinda defeats the purpose of having an attack pack. When I want to connect things underground, I just do a mixture of eyeballing it from above ground and guessing. I'm a highly visual person, so it usually works out. If I wanted help, I'd just make sure both ends were at the same depth (by counting as I went down to them) and then start digging 2x1 t...

Per Jens' explanation of the new world seeds , I would guess that the old world seeds were based off of the computer clock. Btw, per my own tests, the seed field is case sensitive. For example, "XKCD" won't generate the same map as "xkcd". I did try both of those. "xkcd"...
